How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Aircraft Painter
Target MRO facilities and airline maintenance bases
Maintenance, repair, and overhaul facilities hire aircraft painters in volume and are experienced with OPT work authorization. These employers process EAD cards routinely, making them more receptive to OPT candidates than smaller general aviation shops.
Clarify your STEM OPT eligibility early
Aircraft painting roles may qualify for STEM OPT extension if your degree is in an eligible field like materials science or aerospace engineering. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before interviews so you can answer authorization questions confidently.
Highlight FAA-related training and certifications
Any coursework or hands-on training related to aviation coatings, surface preparation, or FAA-regulated processes strengthens your application. Employers in this field prioritize safety compliance, and demonstrated familiarity with aviation standards reduces onboarding risk.
Start your job search before OPT begins
Aircraft painter roles often require background checks and security clearances, which take time. Apply during your final semester so onboarding paperwork can run concurrently with your OPT approval, avoiding gaps between your program end date and your start date.
Understand the 90-day unemployment limit
OPT students cannot exceed 90 days of unemployment without violating status. Line up your aircraft painter applications early and track your unemployed days carefully, especially if you are transitioning between employers or waiting on a security clearance to clear.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as an Aircraft Painter on OPT without H-1B sponsorship?
Yes. OPT authorizes you to work in a role directly related to your degree without requiring your employer to sponsor an H-1B. Your EAD card is your work authorization document. However, if you want to stay in the U.S. long-term after OPT ends, you will eventually need an employer willing to sponsor a visa such as the H-1B.
Do Aircraft Painter roles qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. STEM OPT extension eligibility is determined by whether your degree's CIP code appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Degrees in aerospace engineering, materials science, or manufacturing engineering are likely eligible. Check with your DSO to confirm before you apply for roles expecting a 36-month authorization window.
Will security clearance requirements affect my OPT job search for Aircraft Painter roles?
Potentially, yes. Defense contractors and some airline maintenance facilities require security clearances, and F-1 OPT students on a nonimmigrant visa are generally ineligible for U.S. security clearances. Focus your search on commercial MRO facilities and airlines that do not require clearance. Migrate Mate surfaces OPT-friendly aviation jobs where employers have indicated sponsorship or authorization willingness.
Does working as an Aircraft Painter count as employment related to my degree for OPT purposes?
It must. USCIS requires that OPT employment be directly related to your degree field. An aviation or aerospace engineering graduate working as an aircraft painter applying specialized coatings and surface treatments has a clear connection. A business or humanities graduate would face a harder case. Your DSO can advise on whether the role satisfies the relatedness requirement for your specific degree.
How do I find Aircraft Painter jobs that are open to OPT candidates?
Most general job boards do not filter by work authorization type, which means you waste time on roles where the employer will not consider OPT students. Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT candidates, so you can browse aircraft painter and aviation maintenance roles where employers are already open to your work authorization status.
