How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Boiler Operator
Verify your license eligibility early
Most states require a boiler operator license before you can work unsupervised. Research your state's licensing board requirements before applying, since some require U.S. residency or a Social Security Number, which you'll have on OPT.
Target industries with high operator demand
Hospitals, universities, manufacturing plants, and municipal utilities hire boiler operators year-round. These employers tend to have established HR processes and are more familiar with OPT work authorization than smaller facilities or contractors.
Confirm the role qualifies for your degree
OPT requires you to work in a job directly related to your field of study. Engineering technology, mechanical engineering, or energy systems graduates generally qualify. Review your degree requirements against the job description before accepting any offer.
Apply to employers with existing OPT or H-2B history
Large facilities and municipal utilities that have hired international workers before understand work authorization timelines. Checking an employer's prior visa sponsorship activity can save you weeks of back-and-forth with unfamiliar HR departments.
Report your employment within the required window
Once you accept a boiler operator role, you must report your employer and job details to your DSO within 10 days. Late reporting can jeopardize your OPT status, so treat this step as part of your start-date checklist.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Boiler Operator on OPT?
Yes, if your degree is directly related to the role. Graduates in mechanical engineering, engineering technology, or energy systems typically qualify. The job must align with your field of study as listed on your I-20. If you're unsure whether your degree connects to boiler operations, confirm with your DSO before accepting an offer.
Does a Boiler Operator role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. If you graduated from a STEM-designated program such as mechanical engineering or engineering technology, and your employer can meet the formal training plan and E-Verify requirements, you may be eligible for the 24-month STEM extension. The job itself does not automatically trigger STEM eligibility.
Do Boiler Operator employers typically sponsor visas after OPT?
Some do, particularly large facilities like hospitals, universities, and utility companies that depend on licensed operators for continuous operations. Smaller contractors are less likely. Employers who have sponsored H-2B or H-1B workers before are your best targets. Migrate Mate lists boiler operator roles from employers open to OPT candidates, which is a good starting point.
Will a state boiler license affect my ability to work on OPT?
Not directly. OPT is federal work authorization and is separate from state licensing requirements. However, many boiler operator positions require a valid state license before you can work independently. You'll need a Social Security Number to apply for most licenses, which you'll receive after your OPT is approved and you have a job offer.
What counts as a qualifying job for OPT as a Boiler Operator?
The role must be directly related to your degree field and must be at least 20 hours per week. Part-time shift work can qualify if it meets that threshold. Maintenance-only or purely manual labor roles may not qualify if your degree is in engineering. Review the job description carefully and confirm with your DSO before you start.
