Epileptologist Jobs for OPT Students
Epileptologist jobs on OPT require ACGME-accredited fellowship training and an active medical license in the state where you'll practice. Most positions are hospital-based or academic, making them strong fits for STEM OPT extension eligibility. Your 12- or 24-month OPT window gives you time to pursue H-1B sponsorship through a teaching hospital or health system.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Epileptologist
Target academic medical centers first
Teaching hospitals and university health systems sponsor H-1B visas far more consistently than private practices. They have established immigration infrastructure and legal teams, making the sponsorship process faster and less uncertain for OPT physicians completing fellowships.
Confirm STEM OPT eligibility early
Epileptology roles at research institutions or academic hospitals may qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if your degree program is listed on the STEM designated degree program list. Verify your program's Classification of Instructional Programs code with your DSO before applying.
Apply before your OPT authorization window closes
H-1B cap-subject petitions are filed in April for an October start. If your OPT expires before October, ask your employer about cap-exempt options through nonprofit research institutions or universities, which can file year-round without lottery constraints.
Negotiate immigration support in your offer letter
Request explicit language committing the employer to sponsor your H-1B before signing any offer. Some hospitals have standard clauses; others need direct negotiation. Having it in writing protects you if internal policies change after you've already started working.
Leverage your epilepsy subspecialty as a differentiator
Epileptologists are in short supply relative to demand, especially in rural and underserved hospital systems. Highlighting subspecialty training in your application materials strengthens your case for sponsorship, since employers face harder recruitment challenges filling these roles.
Track your OPT reporting obligations during job transitions
OPT requires you to report employer changes to your DSO within ten days. If you're transitioning between fellowship and an attending position, a gap in employment beyond 90 cumulative days can jeopardize your status. Plan transitions carefully and document every change.

Can F-1 OPT students work as epileptologists in the United States?
Yes, but you must hold an active U.S. medical license in the state where you'll practice, have completed an ACGME-accredited neurology residency and epilepsy fellowship, and have valid OPT authorization. Clinical positions require unrestricted licensure, so confirm your state's licensing board requirements before applying. You can browse current openings on Migrate Mate.
Do epileptologist jobs typically qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree program, not the job title itself. If your U.S. degree, such as a PhD in neuroscience or a qualifying biomedical program, appears on the Department of Homeland Security's STEM designated degree program list, you may be eligible for the 24-month extension. Your DSO can confirm based on your specific CIP code.
Which types of employers are most likely to sponsor an H-1B for an epileptologist?
Academic medical centers, university hospitals, and nonprofit health systems are the most consistent sponsors. They typically have dedicated legal departments experienced with physician immigration cases. Cap-exempt employers, including those affiliated with universities or nonprofit research institutions, can file H-1B petitions year-round and outside the annual lottery, which is a significant advantage for OPT physicians approaching the end of their authorization.
What happens to my OPT status if my fellowship ends and my attending position hasn't started yet?
OPT allows up to 90 cumulative days of unemployment. If the gap between your fellowship end date and your attending start date exceeds that threshold, your OPT status could be jeopardized. Coordinate closely with your DSO and prospective employer to minimize any gap, and make sure your employer has submitted all necessary paperwork, including any H-1B petition, before your OPT expires.
How should I approach salary and sponsorship conversations with a hiring hospital?
Raise sponsorship early, ideally before the offer stage, so you're not negotiating it alongside compensation. Ask directly whether the institution has sponsored H-1B visas for physicians before and who manages the process internally. Epileptologists are a scarce subspecialty, which gives you leverage. Once you have a verbal commitment, request written confirmation of sponsorship intent in your offer letter before signing.
