How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Go To Market Gtm
Target companies with H-1B sponsorship history
Prioritize employers who have sponsored GTM professionals for H-1B visas in past cycles. Series B and later startups and enterprise software companies typically have the infrastructure and legal budgets to support international hires through OPT and beyond.
Frame OPT authorization as low-friction hiring
Employers often assume international students require immediate visa sponsorship. Clarify early that your OPT EAD lets you work without any employer petition or cost for 12 months, removing the main hiring hesitation for early-stage GTM teams.
Align your degree field to STEM OPT eligibility
If your degree is in information systems, data analytics, or a qualifying STEM field, you may be eligible for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. This significantly increases your value to employers who want long-term GTM hires before committing to H-1B sponsorship.
Lead with GTM impact metrics, not immigration status
Quantify your contribution to pipeline generation, product launches, or market expansion in your resume and interviews. GTM hiring managers prioritize revenue impact. Let your work authorization status come up naturally in recruiter screens, not in application materials.
Report GTM employment correctly to your DSO
OPT requires you to report any employment to your DSO within 10 days of starting a role. GTM positions are often cross-functional, so document your official job title and employer name accurately. Consulting or contract GTM engagements must also be reported to stay compliant.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Go-to-Market roles qualify for OPT work authorization?
Yes, GTM roles qualify for OPT as long as the position is directly related to your field of study. A business, marketing, or MBA degree typically supports GTM strategy, sales operations, or product marketing roles. If your degree is in a STEM-designated field like information systems, you may also qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you up to three years of total OPT authorization.
Where can I find Go-to-Market jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters GTM roles by visa sponsorship openness and OPT-friendliness. General job boards don't filter by immigration status, so you can spend weeks applying to roles that don't support international candidates. Migrate Mate surfaces employers with a track record of hiring and sponsoring international GTM professionals.
Can I work in a Go-to-Market role as an independent contractor on OPT?
Yes, OPT permits self-employment and contract work, but the engagement must be directly related to your degree field and you must work at least 20 hours per week. Contract GTM roles, such as fractional go-to-market strategy or product launch consulting, are permitted. You must report the engagement to your DSO and ensure your I-20 reflects the correct employment type.
What happens to my OPT if my Go-to-Market role becomes fully remote or I change GTM teams within the same company?
Changing teams internally at the same employer generally does not require a new OPT report, as long as your employer and job title remain the same. If your title or employer changes, report it to your DSO within 10 days. Fully remote work is permitted on OPT regardless of where the employer is headquartered, though your physical location within the U.S. must remain consistent with your I-20.
Do Go-to-Market roles lead to H-1B sponsorship?
Many do, particularly at growth-stage and enterprise tech companies where GTM functions are core to the business. H-1B eligibility for GTM roles depends on whether the position qualifies as a specialty occupation, which typically requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field as a minimum requirement for the role. GTM strategy, revenue operations, and product marketing roles at companies with legal infrastructure are the most likely to support H-1B sponsorship after OPT.
