Head Chef Jobs for OPT Students
Head Chef jobs on OPT require employers willing to sponsor or support your work authorization before your OPT period expires. Culinary roles qualify as specialty occupations under certain conditions, making H-1B sponsorship possible. STEM OPT extension does not apply to culinary arts degrees, so your 12-month clock matters.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Head Chef
Target independent restaurants and hospitality groups
Large hospitality groups and upscale independent restaurants are more likely to have HR infrastructure for visa sponsorship than small family-owned operations. Research employers with 50 or more staff before applying.
Document that your role qualifies as a specialty occupation
Head Chef positions can qualify for H-1B sponsorship when a culinary arts degree is genuinely required. Collect job descriptions, internal hiring policies, and any documentation proving the role demands specialized degree-level knowledge.
Negotiate sponsorship before accepting an offer
Raise the sponsorship question during final-round interviews, not after signing. Ask directly whether the employer has sponsored visas previously and whether they work with an immigration attorney, so there are no surprises later.
Build a portfolio demonstrating specialized expertise
Employers are more motivated to sponsor chefs with a distinctive, documented skill set. Compile menus, press coverage, competition results, or fine dining experience that shows your expertise is genuinely difficult to replace locally.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Head Chef jobs qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Head Chef roles can qualify for H-1B sponsorship, but it depends on whether the specific position requires at least a bachelor's degree in culinary arts or a related field. Generalist kitchen management roles that accept candidates without a formal degree are harder to sponsor. Employers at fine dining establishments or specialized cuisine restaurants tend to have stronger qualifying cases.
Can I work as a Head Chef on OPT right after graduation?
Yes. Your OPT Employment Authorization Document authorizes you to work in a role directly related to your culinary arts or hospitality degree. A Head Chef position at a qualified employer satisfies this requirement. You must begin employment within your authorized OPT period and ensure your employer reports the job to your DSO for SEVP reporting purposes.
Does a culinary arts degree qualify for a STEM OPT extension?
No. Culinary arts and hospitality management degrees are not on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, so you cannot apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. This means your total OPT window is 12 months. Planning your H-1B sponsorship timeline from day one of employment is essential to avoid a gap in work authorization.
Where can I find Head Chef employers who are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters job listings by visa sponsorship openness, saving you from applying to employers who won't consider international candidates. Searching on Migrate Mate lets you focus your time on hospitality employers who already understand work authorization requirements and are actively hiring OPT talent.
What happens to my OPT status if I change restaurant employers as a Head Chef?
You can change employers on OPT, but you must report the new job to your DSO within 10 days and the role must remain related to your degree field. There is no formal transfer process, but your DSO updates your SEVIS record. If your EAD card names a specific employer, check with your DSO, as standard OPT EADs are not employer-specific.
