How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Liability Claims Specialist
Target insurance carriers and third-party administrators
Large insurance companies and third-party claims administrators are the most consistent sponsors for this role. They hire in volume, have established immigration programs, and are familiar with OPT work authorization timelines and requirements.
Emphasize your degree field in applications
Liability claims roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship when tied to a specific degree field like business administration, finance, or legal studies. Make that connection explicit in your resume so hiring managers can see the specialty occupation case clearly.
Ask about sponsorship directly but professionally
After a first or second interview, ask whether the company has sponsored H-1B workers before and whether this role is eligible. Framing it as a logistics question rather than a demand keeps the conversation constructive and signals self-awareness.
Highlight relevant certifications and software proficiency
Claims certifications like AINS or AIC, and proficiency in claims management platforms, strengthen your candidacy and make sponsorship easier to justify. Employers are more motivated to navigate OPT paperwork for candidates with specialized, demonstrable skills.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for OPT-friendly employers
Migrate Mate surfaces liability claims roles at employers with a track record of sponsoring international candidates. Filtering by sponsorship history saves time and focuses your effort on companies already open to hiring F-1 OPT students.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Liability Claims Specialist jobs qualify for OPT work authorization?
Yes. Liability Claims Specialist roles typically qualify for OPT work authorization when your degree is in a related field such as business administration, finance, risk management, or legal studies. USCIS requires that the job be directly related to your major area of study, so documenting that connection clearly in your resume and any employer paperwork is important.
Is a Liability Claims Specialist role eligible for STEM OPT extension?
Liability Claims Specialist is not typically a STEM-designated role, so most students in this field are not eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Students with degrees in data analytics, computer information systems, or related STEM fields who are applying analytical methods to claims work may want to verify their specific program's CIP code with their DSO before assuming eligibility.
How do I find Liability Claims Specialist jobs that sponsor H-1B visas?
The most efficient approach is to focus on employers with a documented history of H-1B sponsorship in insurance and claims. Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search, letting you browse liability and claims roles at companies that have sponsored international candidates before, so you are not applying blindly to employers who have never navigated the process.
Can I work as a Liability Claims Specialist on OPT while pursuing H-1B sponsorship?
Yes. You can work fully on OPT while your employer files your H-1B petition. OPT authorization is independent of any pending H-1B case. If your OPT expires between April 1 and October 1 and your H-1B petition was filed on time, the cap-gap rule automatically extends your work authorization until your H-1B status takes effect.
What degree backgrounds do employers expect for Liability Claims Specialist OPT roles?
Most employers hiring on OPT for this role look for degrees in business administration, finance, risk management, insurance, or paralegal and legal studies. Some positions in property or casualty claims also accept degrees in economics or public administration. The critical factor is that your degree field directly supports the analytical and regulatory responsibilities of the claims role.
