How to Get Visa Sponsorship in LVT
Confirm your degree qualifies before applying
LVT roles typically require a degree in veterinary technology or a closely related life sciences field. Verify your program's CIP code with your DSO to confirm OPT eligibility before submitting applications to veterinary clinics or specialty hospitals.
Target multi-location veterinary groups
Large veterinary corporations and regional hospital groups employ HR teams with experience processing work authorization paperwork. They are far more likely to have handled OPT documentation before than a single-doctor independent practice with no prior international hires.
Lead with your state licensure status upfront
LVT licensure requirements vary by state. Confirming your active license in the application state signals job-readiness and removes a key hiring objection before it becomes a reason to deprioritize your candidacy during the screening process.
Apply before your EAD arrives, not after
OPT EAD processing currently takes eight to twelve weeks. Starting your job search several months before graduation keeps your timeline realistic and prevents a gap between your program end date and your first day of authorized employment.
Frame OPT as low-cost sponsorship for employers
Many veterinary employers assume hiring international candidates is expensive or complicated. Clarify that OPT requires no employer filing fees and no government petition, making it significantly simpler than visa sponsorship programs they may have encountered before.
Highlight specialty skills that are genuinely in short supply
Proficiency in dentistry, anesthesia monitoring, or exotic animal care narrows the candidate pool considerably. Positioning yourself around a high-demand technical skill gives employers a concrete reason to work through the OPT authorization process rather than defaulting to another candidate.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as an LVT on OPT with an associate's degree in veterinary technology?
Yes. USCIS allows OPT for students who completed associate's, bachelor's, master's, or doctoral programs at an accredited U.S. institution. An associate's degree in veterinary technology from an AVMA-accredited program qualifies. Confirm with your DSO that your specific program and CIP code are properly documented on your I-20 before applying.
Do LVT jobs qualify for STEM OPT extension?
Most veterinary technology programs are classified under CIP code 01.8301, which falls outside the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, meaning a standard 24-month STEM extension is typically unavailable. Students with degrees in biomedical sciences or biology who are applying to LVT roles should check with their DSO, as their specific CIP code may qualify.
How do I find LVT employers that are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate filters jobs by OPT-friendly employers, so you're not guessing which veterinary practices have prior experience with work authorization. Searching there is more efficient than applying broadly and discovering after an offer that an employer won't process OPT documentation. Focus on multi-location hospital groups, which tend to have established hiring processes for international candidates.
Does my LVT work on OPT need to be directly related to my degree?
Yes. USCIS requires that OPT employment be directly related to your major area of study. For veterinary technology graduates, this means clinical LVT roles, veterinary research positions, or technical roles within animal health organizations. Working outside your field of study can jeopardize your OPT status and your ability to maintain valid F-1 status.
Can I work at multiple veterinary practices simultaneously on OPT?
Yes, you can hold more than one OPT job as long as each position is directly related to your degree and your combined weekly hours across all employers meet the minimum 20-hour requirement. You must report each employer to your DSO promptly, as unreported employment changes can trigger status violations even when the work itself is qualifying.
