How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Oncology Social Worker
Target hospitals with dedicated oncology departments
Large academic medical centers and NCI-designated cancer centers hire oncology social workers more frequently than community hospitals. These employers often have established HR processes for OPT and international staff work authorization.
Check whether your MSW program qualifies for STEM OPT
Some MSW programs with a data or health informatics concentration carry a STEM CIP code. If yours does, you may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving employers more time before sponsoring a visa.
Address your OPT timeline proactively with hiring managers
Oncology social work roles often involve onboarding that takes 4 to 8 weeks. Starting the conversation about your authorization window early helps employers plan and reduces concern about timing constraints.
Highlight licensure progress clearly on your application
Many oncology social work positions require an LCSW or LMSW. If you are working toward licensure, state your expected date explicitly. Employers need to know you will meet clinical supervision and practice requirements.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as an oncology social worker on F-1 OPT?
Yes, if the role is directly related to your field of study. An MSW or BSW graduate can work as an oncology social worker on OPT because the position aligns with social work education. Your EAD must list the correct employer type or be an open work authorization card before you begin working.
Do oncology social worker jobs typically lead to visa sponsorship?
Many large hospital systems and academic medical centers have sponsored social workers for H-1B visas, particularly when the employee is already productive and licensed. Sponsorship is not guaranteed, but employers who have done it before are far more likely to do it again. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with sponsorship history in this field.
Does an MSW qualify as a STEM degree for the STEM OPT extension?
Most MSW programs do not carry a STEM CIP code, so the standard 12-month OPT period applies. However, some MSW programs with concentrations in social work informatics, health data, or policy analysis may qualify. Check your program's CIP code with your DSO to determine eligibility before assuming you have the extension available.
What license do I need to work as an oncology social worker on OPT?
Requirements vary by state, but most clinical oncology social work positions require an LMSW at minimum, with LCSW preferred for independent practice. Some employers will hire pre-licensed MSWs under supervision. Confirm your state's licensure requirements and factor in exam timelines when planning your OPT job search, since licensure can take several months after graduation.
How do I find oncology social worker jobs that accept OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and lists jobs from employers with documented sponsorship and OPT experience. Searching there filters out positions where OPT authorization is unlikely to be accepted, saving time compared to applying broadly and encountering rejections tied to work authorization status.
