How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Pedorthist
Verify your ABC or BOC certification status
Employers hiring pedorthists require board certification from ABC or BOC before your start date. Confirm your certification is active and that your OPT employment start date aligns with when certification clears, since gaps can create authorization complications.
Target W-2 clinical and retail positions
Pedorthist roles in hospital systems, orthotic and prosthetic clinics, and specialty footwear retailers are typically W-2 positions. This structure satisfies OPT employment requirements and gives employers a straightforward path to keeping you on staff.
Confirm the role matches your field of study
Your OPT employment must relate directly to your degree program. If your degree is in a health science or pedorthic studies program, document the connection clearly. Mismatches between degree field and job duties can trigger DSO compliance issues.
Start employer conversations early
Many smaller pedorthic practices are unfamiliar with OPT work authorization. Approach hiring managers at least 60 days before your program end date and bring a one-page explainer covering what OPT is, your authorized period, and what the employer needs to do.
Understand that STEM OPT does not apply here
Pedorthics is not a STEM-designated CIP code, so the 24-month STEM OPT extension is not available. Plan your job search and visa transition timeline around the standard 12-month OPT period to avoid any gap in work authorization.
Keep your DSO updated on employment changes
If you change employers, clinic locations, or shift from full-time to part-time, report this to your DSO promptly. OPT requires continuous employment reporting, and unreported changes can put your authorization status at risk.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a pedorthist on OPT?
Yes, provided the role directly relates to your degree field and you hold or are completing board certification. Most pedorthist positions are W-2 clinical or retail roles, which are fully compatible with OPT work authorization. You must begin employment within the authorized dates on your EAD card and report your employer to your DSO.
Does a pedorthist job qualify for STEM OPT extension?
No. Pedorthics is not classified under a STEM-designated CIP code, so the 24-month STEM OPT extension is not available for this role. Your standard OPT period is 12 months. If you want to continue working in the U.S. after OPT, you would need your employer to sponsor an H-1B or explore other visa categories for healthcare workers.
What documents do I need to show a pedorthist employer when starting on OPT?
You'll need to present your Employment Authorization Document (EAD card), your valid F-1 visa, your I-20 with a DSO-endorsed OPT recommendation, and your passport. Most employers will complete Form I-9 using your EAD and passport. Having your board certification documentation ready alongside these materials helps avoid delays in your start date.
How do I find pedorthist employers open to hiring OPT students?
Migrate Mate is the best starting point. It surfaces pedorthist job listings from employers familiar with or open to OPT work authorization, saving you the work of filtering out roles with hard citizenship or permanent residency requirements. Hospital systems, orthotics and prosthetics groups, and specialty footwear chains are typically the most OPT-receptive employers in this field.
What happens to my OPT status if my pedorthist employer closes or I lose my job?
OPT allows up to 90 days of unemployment during your authorization period. If your employer closes or you're let go, that clock starts immediately. Notify your DSO right away and begin your job search. If you exceed 90 days of cumulative unemployment before finding a new qualifying pedorthist role, your OPT authorization is terminated.
