How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Pruner
Confirm your work is degree-related
OPT requires that your job be directly related to your degree. Pruning work qualifies for horticulture, plant science, arboriculture, and forestry students. Document how your daily tasks connect to your coursework before accepting any offer.
Report your employer to your DSO promptly
You must report your employer's name, address, and job title to your Designated School Official within 10 days of starting work. Failing to do so puts your OPT authorization at risk, even if the job itself is fully compliant.
Clarify your employment type upfront
Pruner roles are often seasonal or contract-based. OPT permits both full-time and part-time work, but during post-completion OPT you must work at least 20 hours per week to maintain valid status throughout your authorization period.
Track your unemployment days carefully
OPT allows a maximum of 90 days of unemployment for most students. Seasonal pruning work has natural gaps between contracts, so keep precise records of your start and end dates to avoid accidentally exceeding that limit.
Ask employers about E-Verify before applying
STEM OPT extension applicants must work for an E-Verify employer. If your degree is in a STEM field and you plan to extend, confirm E-Verify enrollment with any prospective pruning or horticulture employer before committing to the role.
Use your practical experience to strengthen future petitions
Documented pruning and horticulture experience, especially with measurable outcomes like crop yield improvements or disease reduction rates, strengthens future H-2A, H-1B, or EB-3 petitions if you pursue long-term agricultural career sponsorship.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a pruner on OPT?
Yes, if your degree is in a related field such as horticulture, plant science, arboriculture, or forestry. OPT authorizes practical training that is directly related to your major, so the connection between your pruning work and your degree program must be documentable and genuine.
Where can I find pruner jobs that accept OPT students?
Migrate Mate is the recommended platform for F-1 OPT students searching for pruner and horticulture roles with employers open to OPT work authorization. Filtering by OPT-friendly employers saves significant time compared to applying broadly and explaining your work authorization status at each step.
Does seasonal pruning work count toward my OPT period?
Yes, but gaps between seasonal contracts count toward your 90-day unemployment limit. If one pruning contract ends in March and your next doesn't start until May, those weeks count as unemployment days. Staying under 90 cumulative days is critical to maintaining valid post-completion OPT status.
Can I work for multiple pruning employers simultaneously on OPT?
Yes. OPT permits concurrent employment with multiple employers, as long as each role is related to your degree field and you're working at least 20 hours per week in total. Report each employer separately to your DSO and keep documentation showing how each position relates to your academic program.
Is pruning work eligible for the STEM OPT extension?
Only if your qualifying degree is in a STEM-designated field, such as agricultural science with a STEM CIP code, and the employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Horticulture and plant science programs sometimes carry STEM designation, but you should verify your specific program's CIP code with your international student office before assuming eligibility.
