How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Seasonal Worker
Verify the role qualifies as OPT employment
Seasonal Worker positions must relate to your field of study to count as valid OPT employment. A hospitality management graduate working in resort operations qualifies. A computer science graduate picking crops likely does not. Misaligned work risks your OPT status.
Match your OPT end date to the season
Most seasonal contracts run three to six months. Check your OPT authorization end date before accepting an offer. If the season extends past your OPT period, you will need a separate work authorization or the role ends when your status does.
Request a formal offer letter before starting
Your DSO and USCIS require documented employment. Ask every seasonal employer for a written offer letter stating your start date, job title, weekly hours, and supervisor contact. Verbal offers are not sufficient proof of valid OPT employment for reporting purposes.
Report your employer to your DSO within 10 days
Once you accept a seasonal position, report the employer name, address, job title, and start date to your DSO within 10 days. Late reporting creates compliance issues on your SEVIS record, which can affect future visa applications and H-1B eligibility.
Track hours carefully for part-time seasonal work
OPT requires at least 20 hours per week to count as authorized employment. Many seasonal roles fluctuate with weather, bookings, or harvest cycles. Keep weekly hour records. Falling below 20 hours consistently can be treated as a period of unemployment.
Plan your next status before the season ends
Seasonal work rarely converts to full-time sponsorship. Before your season ends, have a clear plan for your next authorization period, whether that is STEM OPT extension, a new OPT job, or a visa change. Do not wait until the final weeks.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can F-1 OPT students legally work as seasonal workers?
Yes, but the role must relate to your field of study. A tourism or hospitality major working at a ski resort or theme park has a clear connection. An engineering major working a general labor harvest job would have difficulty justifying the connection. Your DSO can help you assess whether a specific role qualifies before you accept.
Do seasonal employers typically sponsor OPT students?
Most seasonal employers do not sponsor H-1B visas because the work is temporary and they have no long-term staffing need. However, they do hire OPT students because OPT is self-sponsored and requires nothing from the employer beyond a formal offer letter. Browse Migrate Mate to find seasonal employers already familiar with OPT hiring requirements.
What happens to my OPT if the season ends early?
If your seasonal contract ends before your OPT authorization expires, that gap counts as unemployment. F-1 OPT students are allowed up to 90 days of unemployment on standard OPT (150 days on STEM OPT extension). You need to find new qualifying employment quickly or risk falling out of status before your OPT end date.
Does seasonal work count toward STEM OPT extension eligibility?
It can, if the role genuinely relates to your STEM-designated degree program. The work must be directly connected to your field, not just generally skilled labor. Roles in environmental science fieldwork, agricultural technology, or data collection for a STEM graduate may qualify. Roles with no technical connection to your degree generally do not, even if the employer has an EIN.
How many seasonal jobs can I hold at the same time on OPT?
OPT allows multiple concurrent employers, provided each role relates to your field of study and you work at least 20 hours per week in total across all positions. Each employer must be reported to your DSO separately. This is useful if one seasonal role is part-time, as a second qualifying position can keep you compliant with the minimum hours requirement.
