How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Sheet Metal Fabricator
Target manufacturers with established OPT hiring history
Aerospace, HVAC, and defense manufacturers regularly hire fabricators and have HR teams familiar with OPT work authorization. These employers are more likely to understand your 12-month timeline and support a future H-1B sponsorship pathway without extensive explanation.
Confirm your degree qualifies before applying
OPT must be directly related to your major. Mechanical engineering, manufacturing technology, and industrial engineering degrees have the clearest connection to sheet metal fabrication. If your degree is in an adjacent field, document how the role applies your coursework before submitting applications.
Highlight certifications alongside your degree
AWS welding certifications, OSHA 10 or 30 credentials, and CAD software proficiency signal job-readiness to hiring managers. Certifications help offset any employer hesitation about OPT timelines by demonstrating you can contribute immediately without a long onboarding period.
Be transparent about your OPT end date upfront
Disclose your OPT authorization period during the interview process, not after an offer. Employers who understand the timeline early can begin H-1B planning before your OPT expires, making the transition smoother and reducing the risk of a gap in employment.

Can I work as a Sheet Metal Fabricator on OPT?
Yes, as long as the role is directly related to your degree program. Mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, and industrial technology degrees have a clear connection to sheet metal fabrication. You'll need a valid EAD card before your start date, and your employer must be aware you're working under OPT authorization.
Does a Sheet Metal Fabricator role qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. If your degree is in a STEM-designated field such as mechanical engineering or manufacturing engineering, and the fabricator role applies that technical knowledge, you may qualify for the STEM OPT extension. Your employer must also be enrolled in E-Verify to sponsor the extension.
How do I find Sheet Metal Fabricator employers who are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find Sheet Metal Fabricator roles from employers already familiar with OPT and visa sponsorship. Searching general job boards can result in applications to companies that have never hired international workers. Targeting employers with an established sponsorship history significantly improves your chances of a successful outcome.
What happens to my OPT status if I'm laid off from a Sheet Metal Fabricator role?
You have a cumulative 90-day unemployment allowance during standard OPT, which increases to 150 days if you're on the STEM OPT extension. The clock starts on the day your employment ends, not when you report it. Report any job loss to your DSO immediately and begin searching for a new qualifying position as quickly as possible.
Can a Sheet Metal Fabricator employer sponsor me for an H-1B visa after OPT?
Yes, but the role must qualify as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. Sheet metal fabrication positions with significant engineering, CAD design, or quality systems responsibilities are more likely to meet this standard than general production roles. Discussing H-1B sponsorship with your employer before OPT expires gives both sides time to plan.
