How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Value Based Care
Target employers with existing OPT infrastructure
Health systems, managed care organizations, and value-based care startups that already employ international staff are far more likely to navigate OPT paperwork smoothly. Look for companies with dedicated HR teams or in-house immigration counsel.
Clarify whether your role qualifies for STEM OPT
Value Based Care roles tied to health informatics, data science, or biostatistics often qualify for the 24-month STEM extension. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before accepting an offer to avoid losing extension eligibility.
Emphasize quantitative skills in your application
Employers prioritizing value-based payment models want analysts who can work with claims data, quality metrics, and risk scores. Highlighting SQL, Python, or Epic experience makes you a stronger candidate and justifies OPT sponsorship investment.
Apply 90 days before your program end date
OPT applications take up to 90 days to process. Starting your job search early gives you time to receive your EAD before your program ends, so you can begin work without interruption at program completion.
Understand the E-Verify requirement for STEM extensions
If you plan to pursue the 24-month STEM OPT extension, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm this before accepting an offer. Many large health systems already participate, but smaller clinics or consultancies may not.
Frame your visa situation clearly and early
Proactively tell recruiters you are authorized to work on OPT and specify your EAD expiration date. Clarity upfront prevents misunderstandings and signals professionalism, which matters when employers are weighing whether to invest in future H-1B sponsorship.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work in Value Based Care jobs on OPT without employer sponsorship?
Yes. OPT work authorization comes from USCIS, not your employer, so you do not need your employer to sponsor a visa to start working. Your EAD card is your work authorization. Employers in Value Based Care simply need to verify it through I-9, and E-Verify if they are enrolled. No employer-initiated petition is required during your OPT period.
Do Value Based Care roles qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension?
Many do, but it depends on your degree's CIP code, not your job title. Roles focused on health informatics, data analytics, biostatistics, or health information management typically qualify when paired with a STEM-designated degree. Roles that are primarily administrative or policy-focused may not qualify. Confirm your CIP code with your Designated School Official before accepting any offer.
Where can I find Value Based Care jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters jobs by visa-friendliness, so you are not wasting time applying to roles that will not consider international candidates. Value Based Care positions at health systems, managed care organizations, and accountable care organizations appear regularly on the platform.
What happens to my OPT status if a Value Based Care contract role ends early?
You have a 90-day unemployment allowance across your entire OPT period. If a contract ends before your EAD expires, that buffer begins counting. You can continue job searching and accept a new position within the same field. Exceeding 90 days of cumulative unemployment while on OPT puts your F-1 status at risk, so track your days carefully and notify your DSO promptly.
Will Value Based Care employers sponsor me for an H-1B after my OPT ends?
Some will, particularly large health systems, payer organizations, and consulting firms with established immigration programs. Value Based Care roles involving data analysis or care management often qualify as H-1B specialty occupations. Smaller organizations or federally qualified health centers may lack the resources for sponsorship. It is worth asking about long-term sponsorship intent during the interview process, before you accept an offer.
