Which biotech & pharma companies sponsor H-1B1 visas in Illinois?
Several major life sciences employers in Illinois have filed H-1B1 Labor Condition Applications through the Department of Labor, including AbbVie, Baxter International, Horizon Therapeutics, and Takeda Pharmaceuticals, which has its U.S. headquarters in Deerfield. Smaller biotech firms and contract research organizations in the Chicago metro area also participate in H-1B1 sponsorship, particularly for specialized scientific and clinical roles.
Which cities in Illinois have the most biotech & pharma H-1B1 sponsorship jobs?
The Chicago metro area accounts for the majority of biotech and pharma H-1B1 activity in Illinois. The North Shore suburbs, particularly Deerfield, Lake County, and Abbott Park, host several large pharmaceutical headquarters. The Illinois Medical District on Chicago's Near West Side and the Fulton Market biotech corridor have also seen growing employer concentration for research and development roles.
What types of biotech & pharma roles typically qualify for H-1B1 sponsorship?
Roles that typically qualify require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific scientific or technical field directly related to the position. In biotech and pharma, this commonly includes research scientists, computational biologists, clinical data managers, regulatory affairs specialists, bioinformatics analysts, and pharmaceutical chemists. The degree must be specifically tied to the job duties, not a general science background, to satisfy the specialty occupation standard.
How do I find biotech & pharma H-1B1 sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters postings by visa type, including H-1B1, and by industry, so you can search biotech and pharma roles in Illinois without sorting through employers who don't sponsor. Because H-1B1 sponsorship is less common than H-1B sponsorship, focusing on larger Illinois-based life sciences employers with established immigration programs improves your chances of finding active openings.
Are there any Illinois-specific or industry-specific considerations for H-1B1 sponsorship in biotech & pharma?
The H-1B1 is available only to nationals of Chile and Singapore and requires an employer-filed Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor before the visa can be issued. Illinois biotech and pharma employers familiar with H-1B sponsorship are generally also equipped to handle H-1B1 petitions, since the process is similar. Roles in highly regulated areas such as pharmaceutical manufacturing or clinical trials may involve additional documentation requirements related to the specific position.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B1 biotech & pharma jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
