Which education employers in Illinois sponsor H-1B1 visas?
The University of Chicago, Northwestern University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, and DePaul University are among the Illinois education institutions with a history of filing H-1B1 petitions. Larger public school districts and edtech companies headquartered in Chicago have also sponsored H-1B1 workers, though sponsorship patterns vary by role and hiring cycle.
Which cities in Illinois have the most education H-1B1 sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the overwhelming majority of education H-1B1 opportunities in Illinois, driven by its concentration of research universities, community colleges, and education technology companies. Evanston, home to Northwestern University, and Champaign-Urbana, where the University of Illinois flagship campus is located, also generate H-1B1 filings in education, particularly for faculty and research-focused positions.
What types of education roles typically qualify for H-1B1 sponsorship in Illinois?
Roles that require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field are most likely to qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B1. In education, this commonly includes instructional designers, curriculum developers, research scientists, data analysts in academic settings, educational technologists, and university faculty. General teaching assistant or administrative support roles often do not meet the specialty occupation threshold without a degree requirement tied directly to the position.
How do I find education H-1B1 sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international job seekers and filters education H-1B1 sponsorship jobs in Illinois so you can search without sorting through listings from employers who don't sponsor. Rather than scanning general job boards where sponsorship status is unclear, Migrate Mate surfaces roles from Illinois education employers who have sponsored H-1B1 workers, saving meaningful time during a job search.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for H-1B1 sponsorship in education?
Illinois does not impose state-level restrictions on H-1B1 employment, but education employers in the state often have defined academic hiring calendars, meaning sponsorship opportunities in faculty or research roles tend to cluster around fall recruitment cycles. Public university employers are subject to state procurement and HR processes that can affect how quickly they initiate petitions, so factoring institutional timelines into your job search is worth doing.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B1 education jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
