VP, GAS AND RENEWABLE GENERATION
Posting Start Date: 3/23/26
POSITION PURPOSE
This position will report to our Headquarters location in Bismarck, ND.
Provides executive leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight for all Basin Electric’s owned gas-fired generation facilities and associated gas pipeline operations. This role is accountable for ensuring safe, reliable, compliant, and cost-effective operations; developing and executing long-term generation strategies; and managing the full lifecycle of gas generation assets, including operations, maintenance, capital planning, and budgeting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Responsible for planning, guiding, directing, and budgeting for safe, reliable, and efficient operation of our gas generation assets and associated gas pipelines.
- Working with Cooperative Safety, establishes a safe working environment for all Basin Electric’s gas generating operations.
- Work with Engineering and Construction staff on the development of new gas generating resources and their transition to commercial operation. This includes working with Human Resources on the staffing of the facilities.
- Develop and execute a long-term strategy for gas-fired generation and pipeline operations to support overall power supply objectives.
- Provide executive guidance on fuel strategy, dispatch optimization, reliability planning, and risk mitigation.
- Ensure alignment of generation strategy with regulatory requirements, cooperative priorities, and evolving market conditions.
- Lead, plan, and manage all day-to-day operations for gas-fired generation facilities.
- Oversee safe, compliant, and reliable operation of all gas pipelines that support the facilities.
- Establish and maintain operating procedures, performance standards, and best-practice workflows.
- Ensure environmental, safety, and regulatory compliance for all gas facilities.
- Direct the maintenance strategy for all gas-fired, wind and renewable assets, including LTSA’s, preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs.
- Optimize equipment performance, lifecycle management, and major maintenance planning.
- Lead capital planning and execution for upgrades, replacements, and expansions.
- Build strong cross-functional relationships with Engineering, Safety, Environmental, Warehouse, Compliance, and Finance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Energy Management, Business, or from an Engineering Accreditation Commission/Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) accredited engineering program, or related field, and 10 years of related engineering, managerial, and technical experience; or
- Associate’s degree from a power plant technology or similar program and 12 years of progressively advanced management and technical power production-based experience.
- Experience leading a multi-asset generation portfolio with significant capital and operational complexity.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Travel is required, either by motor vehicle or traveling in Cooperative or commercial plane.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree in Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Experience in a cooperative or public power environment.
- Deep understanding of generation dispatch, fuel markets, and power supply strategy.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
This position requires frequent sitting and standing/walking; and occasionally reaching below and above shoulder level, use of keyboard/computer, bending, kneeling, lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds, and pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds. It also requires finger dexterity and hand coordination. This position requires good hearing and vision, and the ability to speak.
