The Fishery Scientist – Predation Coordinator will take the lead in organizing predation related projects occurring throughout the Columbia River basin. This individual serves as a coordinator that is familiar with scientific research, effectiveness monitoring, and management strategy evaluation related to predation in the Columbia River Basin, including piscine, avian, and pinniped predators. The coordinator keeps in close contact with CRITFC science staff, and CRITFC member-tribal project leaders and agencies that perform work on predation related issues. The coordinator must schedule and lead meetings that ensure synergy among predation projects across agencies and tribes and must help identify areas where fish benefits could be realized through existing project efficiencies and/or initiating new predation mitigation initiatives. The predation coordinator is responsible for daily budget and contract management and may negotiate contract terms with funding agencies. The coordinator considers the direct measurable benefits of each predation mitigation action, as well as the holistic basin-wide benefits of a comprehensive predator management program.

Responsibilities

• Willingness to collaborate and work with staff from agencies and tribes using integrity, decorum, and tact are essential.
• Organizing and prioritizing predation related projects occurring throughout the Columbia River basin.
• Ensuring predation mitigation efforts have a strong scientific foundation and are empirically based.
• Maintaining an ongoing standardized metric of predation impacts for all predators in relation to all affected salmonid, lamprey, and sturgeon populations.
• Developing and coordinating spatial and temporal aspects of predation mitigation strategies.
• Monitoring and evaluating effectiveness of mitigation strategies.
• Presenting and participating in Tribal, Federal, State, and professional forums.
• Lead efforts to coordinate predation related work with other agencies and their staff.
• Project budgeting, statement of work preparation, project implementation, and project reporting requirements for the project to function.
• Develop and maintain predation capacity and services (including staff training and education) to support the mission of the organization. This may consist of finding and maintaining funding for predation staff and enhancing resources to support efficient implementation of research and management actions.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree (i.e., MS, PhD) in fisheries science, ecology, or a related field.
• Thorough knowledge of fish ecology, population dynamics, and compensatory/additive concepts of predation ecology.
• Thorough knowledge of life-history characteristics of salmonids, lamprey, and sturgeon.
• Knowledge of predation mortality assessment and sampling methodology.
• Demonstrated ability to work closely and coordinate with diverse personalities, cultures and agencies to advance collaboration value of work in the basin associated with predation.
• Knowledge of Endangered Species Act regulations relevant to threatened and endangered species in the Columbia Basin ecosystem.
• Demonstrated leadership abilities.
• Superior written and oral communications skills.
• Familiarity with Tribal restoration plans and objectives.
• Ability to readily travel for meetings.
• Valid driver’s license.

CRITFC Motor Vehicle Policy

This job occasionally requires driving a CRITFC vehicle or your own vehicle for business (mileage compensated), and therefore you must be able to meet the terms of the CRITFC Motor Vehicle policy. Per the policy, applicants are required to have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record for the past three years. This includes a three-year record clear of the following:

• Reckless Driving
• Driving Under the Influence
• Suspension or revoked license
• No more than two at-fault accidents
• No more than one major violation or two minor violations.
