Who We Are
Nuro is a self-driving technology company on a mission to make autonomy accessible to all. Founded in 2016, Nuro is building the world’s most scalable driver, combining cutting-edge AI with automotive-grade hardware. Nuro licenses its core technology, the Nuro Driver™, to support a wide range of applications, from robotaxis and commercial fleets to personally owned vehicles. With technology proven over years of self-driving deployments, Nuro gives the automakers and mobility platforms a clear path to AVs at commercial scale—empowering a safer, richer, and more connected future.
About The Role
We are looking for an experienced mechanical designer to join our world class team of engineers in our Autonomous Vehicle Hardware group. In this role you will be responsible for the research, design, and delivery of our autonomous hardware solutions that enable Nuro’s autonomous systems. This work spans electronics and sensor packaging, technology development, and vehicle integrations to support customer programs. You’ll be developing the hardware solutions that safely and reliably enables our L4 autonomy system across platforms, use cases, and operational conditions.
About The Work
- Own the engineering design, development, and release of autonomous hardware necessary to enable the Nuro Driver system across customer platforms.
- Lead the specification and integration in collaboration with our vehicle partners to ensure platform integrations meet the performance needs of our Nuro Driver system and satisfy customer product requirements.
- Work collaboratively across cross-functional teams to develop and execute sensing and electronics architecture for self-driving robots designed for mass deployment on public roads.
- Lead efforts to benchmark performance, integration, and reliability of available electronics technologies that drives internal make vs. buy decisions.
- Own the identification and key suppliers to bring ideas from concept to production readiness.
- Manage designed parts and assemblies through proof-of-concept validation up through production readiness.
- Drive part quality improvements, cost reductions, and efficiency improvements.
- Communicate technical decisions, development plans, and ongoing issues to management.
About You
- 4+ years of experience in mechanical design with a proven track record on design, build, and test of electro-mechanical hardware.
- Experience working across the entire production pipeline from personally hand building prototypes to working with quality and manufacturing teams in mass production factory environments.
- Experience using a wide range of manufacturing processes from small scale to high volume, such as rapid prototyping, sheet metal, injection molding, machining, and casting.
- Experience designing for a wide range of materials with ability to create optimal geometry based on cost, weight, strength/durability, and thermal analysis, using both FEA and hand calculations.
- Experience working with reliability teams to create/execute test plans that validate your designs.
- Experience working with fabrication and module vendors to communicate design requirements, incorporate DFM feedback, manage initial production runs, and oversee validation testing.
- Self-starter with strong communication and organizational skills — relentlessly resourceful, with a bias towards action.
- Proficiency with CAD is a must and familiarity with UG NX is a plus.
- Willing and able to support infrequent domestic and international travel.
At Nuro, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. For this position, the reasonably expected base pay range is between $120,270 and $180,410 for the level at which this job has been scoped. Your base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills. In the event that you are considered for a different level, a higher or lower pay range would apply. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, equity, and a competitive benefits package.
At Nuro, we celebrate differences and are committed to a diverse workplace that fosters inclusion and psychological safety for all employees. Nuro is proud to be an equal opportunity employer and expressly prohibits any form of workplace discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, genetic information, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected characteristics.

Align your portfolio to autonomous hardware
Nuro's Mechanical Engineer openings emphasize robotics-relevant disciplines: thermal management, structural design, and sensor integration. Tailor your portfolio to show systems-level hardware experience, not just component design, before you apply.
Verify your visa category before applying
Nuro sponsors multiple work visa types for engineering roles, including H-1B, TN, and OPT. Confirm which category fits your citizenship and current status before reaching out, so your first conversation with a recruiter focuses on fit rather than eligibility basics.
Target teams with deployed hardware programs
Nuro's roles tied to active vehicle programs move faster through headcount approvals than exploratory R&D positions. Prioritize job postings that reference production, validation, or field operations to shorten the path from offer to visa filing.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles by visa type
Not every Mechanical Engineer posting at Nuro explicitly states which visas are supported. Use Migrate Mate to filter Nuro's open roles by the specific visa category you need, so you only spend time on positions that match your authorization situation.
Time your H-1B filing window around Nuro's hiring cycle
USCIS opens H-1B registration in March each year with an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, confirm your CPT or OPT end date against the cap-gap rules so you understand exactly how long you're authorized to work while your petition is pending.

Find Mechanical Engineer at Nuro JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Nuro sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers?
Yes, Nuro sponsors H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineer roles. The company has a consistent history of filing H-1B petitions across its engineering functions, which includes hardware and systems roles. If you're currently on OPT or another nonimmigrant status, Nuro's engineering recruiting team is accustomed to handling transitions to H-1B sponsorship.
How do I apply for Mechanical Engineer jobs at Nuro?
You can browse Nuro's open Mechanical Engineer positions and filter by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles specifically tagged for international candidates. When applying directly, tailor your resume to reflect hardware disciplines relevant to autonomous vehicles, such as thermal systems, mechanism design, or vehicle integration, since Nuro's hiring bar is calibrated to those specializations.
Which visa types does Nuro commonly use for Mechanical Engineer roles?
Nuro sponsors a range of visa categories for Mechanical Engineers, including H-1B, H-1B1 for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, TN for Canadian and Mexican citizens, F-1 OPT and CPT for students, J-1 for exchange visitors, and EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa pathways for candidates pursuing permanent residence. The right category depends on your nationality, education, and career stage.
What qualifications does Nuro expect for Mechanical Engineer positions?
Most Mechanical Engineer roles at Nuro require a bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. For H-1B eligibility, the role must qualify as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards, which Nuro's hardware engineering positions typically meet given their degree-specific requirements. Hands-on experience with CAD, FEA, or robotics hardware is commonly expected across seniority levels.
How do I plan the timeline for visa sponsorship at Nuro?
If you need an H-1B, USCIS registration opens in early March and the fiscal year begins October 1, so an offer made in spring or summer may require a cap-gap bridge if you're on OPT. For EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card pathways, PERM labor certification filed with the DOL typically adds 12 to 18 months before USCIS adjudicates the immigrant petition. Discuss your timeline with Nuro's HR team at the offer stage.
