Which accounting companies sponsor F-1 OPT visas in Michigan?
Public accounting firms with Michigan offices, including Deloitte, PwC, Ernst & Young, and KPMG in Detroit, along with regional firms like Plante Moran, Rehmann, and Yeo & Yeo, have historically hired international students on OPT. Large corporate employers such as General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis also maintain in-house accounting teams that have employed OPT candidates. Sponsorship availability varies by role, office, and hiring cycle, so confirming directly with each employer's HR team is essential.
Which cities in Michigan have the most accounting F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs?
Detroit and its suburbs, including Troy, Southfield, and Dearborn, concentrate the largest share of Michigan accounting OPT opportunities given the density of Big Four offices and automotive industry headquarters there. Grand Rapids is Michigan's second-largest accounting market, with a strong presence of regional CPA firms and manufacturing companies. Ann Arbor also has relevant opportunities tied to its university-affiliated employers and growing tech and life sciences sector.
What types of accounting roles typically qualify for F-1 OPT sponsorship?
Roles directly tied to a student's accounting or finance degree field qualify for F-1 OPT authorization, including staff accountant, audit associate, tax associate, financial analyst, and accounts payable or receivable specialist positions. Roles in management accounting, cost accounting, and internal audit also generally fall within the scope of accounting OPT. The position must be directly related to the major field of study listed on the student's I-20, which DSOs and employers verify before authorizing OPT employment.
How do I find accounting F-1 OPT sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international students and filters job listings by visa type, including F-1 OPT, so you can search accounting roles in Michigan without sorting through positions that require existing work authorization or citizenship. Using Migrate Mate, you can narrow results to accounting and auditing employers in cities like Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Ann Arbor that have a documented history of hiring OPT candidates, which saves significant time compared to unfiltered job searches.
Are there any Michigan-specific considerations for F-1 OPT accounting students?
Michigan's accounting job market is heavily influenced by the automotive and manufacturing industries, so familiarity with cost accounting, inventory valuation, and industry-specific financial reporting standards can strengthen an application at employers like GM, Ford, or Tier 1 suppliers. Michigan requires CPAs to meet 150 credit hours for licensure, so OPT students pursuing certification should confirm their foreign credential evaluation is handled early. Public accounting firms in Michigan typically recruit on a structured fall and spring timeline aligned with Michigan university academic calendars.
