Which government employers in New York sponsor F-1 CPT positions?
Federal agencies with a New York presence, including the U.S. Census Bureau, the Social Security Administration, and various Department of Labor regional offices, have historically taken CPT interns. State agencies such as the New York State Department of Labor and the Office of General Services also hire interns. Public universities including CUNY and SUNY campuses are government entities and regularly structure roles around CPT eligibility.
Which cities in New York have the most government F-1 CPT sponsorship jobs?
Albany has the highest concentration of state government roles given its position as the state capital, housing agencies across policy, health, and finance. New York City follows closely, with federal agency regional offices, public authorities, and city government departments across Manhattan and the outer boroughs. Buffalo and Syracuse also have regional government offices and public university systems that generate CPT-eligible internship opportunities.
What types of government roles typically qualify for F-1 CPT sponsorship in New York?
Roles in public policy analysis, data analysis, urban planning, public health research, communications, and information technology within government agencies tend to align with CPT requirements. The key factor is that the position must relate directly to your degree program and be authorized by your Designated School Official. Administrative support roles without a clear academic connection are less likely to meet your school's CPT authorization criteria.
How do I find government F-1 CPT sponsorship jobs in New York?
Migrate Mate is a job board built specifically for international students and includes government sector roles in New York that are structured around F-1 CPT eligibility. Filtering by visa type and industry on Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have indicated openness to CPT arrangements, saving you the work of screening postings manually. Always confirm CPT authorization with your DSO before accepting any offer.
Are there any New York-specific considerations for F-1 CPT in the government sector?
New York State agencies and New York City government departments operate under public sector hiring rules, which can mean longer onboarding timelines than private employers. This matters for CPT because your authorization must cover the actual start date of your internship. Some federal positions require background checks that extend the pre-start period, so building extra lead time between your offer and your intended start date is advisable when planning your CPT authorization window.
