INTRODUCTION
Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

Align your portfolio to autonomy-specific problems
Waymo's Data Science Engineer roles center on sensor fusion, perception modeling, and large-scale simulation data. Showcasing projects involving geospatial datasets, real-time inference pipelines, or safety-critical evaluation frameworks signals domain fit before your resume reaches a recruiter.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsoring roles
Not every Data Science Engineer listing at Waymo is tied to active sponsorship pipelines. Use Migrate Mate to browse roles confirmed for visa sponsorship, so you're targeting positions where the hiring infrastructure for your visa category is already in place.
Prepare for the specialty occupation documentation standard
USCIS requires that H-1B petitions demonstrate a direct relationship between your degree field and the role. For Data Science Engineer positions, that means documenting how your specific degree, whether in statistics, computer science, or a related field, maps to the technical duties in the job description.
Time your application around Waymo's recruiting cycles
Autonomous vehicle companies like Waymo run concentrated hiring pushes ahead of H-1B cap season in April. Applying in Q4 or early Q1 gives your process enough runway for offer finalization, LCA filing with DOL, and I-129 preparation before the April 1 filing window opens.
Understand how PERM affects your long-term path
If Waymo sponsors your Green Card through EB-2 or EB-3, your employer will need to complete PERM labor certification with DOL. Start that conversation once you're established in the role, as PERM timelines can run 12 to 18 months before the I-140 petition stage begins.

Find Data Science Engineer at Waymo JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Waymo sponsor H-1B visas for Data Science Engineers?
Yes, Waymo sponsors H-1B visas for Data Science Engineer roles. The company has a consistent history of filing H-1B petitions for technical positions across its engineering organization. If you're subject to the annual H-1B cap, your offer timing will need to align with the April 1 filing window and USCIS's lottery registration period in March.
How do I apply for Data Science Engineer jobs at Waymo?
You can apply directly through Waymo's careers page or find visa-sponsorship-confirmed listings through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by sponsorship track record and visa type. Before applying, tailor your resume to reflect experience with large-scale data pipelines, ML model evaluation, or autonomy-related datasets, since Waymo's technical bar for this function is specifically calibrated to those domains.
Which visa types does Waymo commonly use for Data Science Engineer roles?
Waymo sponsors H-1B visas for most international Data Science Engineers, along with the H-1B1 for nationals of Singapore and Chile, and the E-3 for Australian citizens. For candidates seeking permanent residence, Waymo has supported EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa petitions, which require PERM labor certification through the Department of Labor before the I-140 stage.
What qualifications does Waymo look for in Data Science Engineer candidates?
Waymo's Data Science Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's or graduate degree in statistics, computer science, mathematics, or a closely related quantitative field. Strong candidates bring hands-on experience with Python or SQL, large-scale data infrastructure, and model performance evaluation. Experience in robotics, autonomous systems, or safety-critical environments is a practical differentiator, given the nature of Waymo's core product.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take when joining Waymo as a Data Science Engineer?
Timeline depends on your visa category. H-1B transfers from another employer can be filed immediately, with USCIS premium processing returning a decision in about 15 business days. New cap-subject H-1B petitions require waiting for the April filing window, adding several months to your start date. E-3 consular processing in Australia generally runs two to four weeks from interview to visa issuance.
