We are driven to do more. More for our customers and the financial professionals who offer our products. If you are driven to do more and love the challenge of pursuing more, Athene is your kind of company. You will find we offer more than the basics to create an inclusive and dynamic work environment at our various locations.
Purpose:
Athene’s Future Engineer Initiative is transforming how software is built in the age of AI. We are creating an AI-native developer platform where intelligent agents, Model Context Protocols (MCPs), and engineers collaborate to deliver secure, high-quality software faster and more reliably.
We are seeking a Principal AI Platform Engineer to play a foundational role in shaping and implementing this transformation. This is not a predefined roadmap execution role — you will help determine what our AI-assisted SDLC should look like, how agentic systems are orchestrated, and how intelligent automation is embedded at enterprise scale.
This is a hands-on platform engineering role focused on integrating Claude Code CLI, AWS Bedrock, agent orchestration frameworks, and MCP-driven workflows directly into software delivery systems.
Accountabilities:
As a Principal AI Platform Engineer, you will combine architectural discovery with hands-on implementation to define and build Athene’s AI-native engineering practice.
Shape Athene’s AI Engineering Strategy
-
Partner with senior engineers and architects to define the architectural direction of Athene’s AI-native SDLC, including RAG strategies, multi-agent orchestration models, and adoption of frameworks such as Strands and AgentCore.
-
Evaluate and prototype emerging AI capabilities (Claude Code CLI, Bedrock services, MCP integrations, orchestration frameworks) to determine production viability in a regulated enterprise environment.
-
Lead discovery efforts to determine how AI agents should interact with codebases, CI/CD systems, telemetry, and internal developer platforms.
Architect and Build the AI-Native SDLC Platform
-
Architect and implement AI-native capabilities within Athene’s SDLC using Claude Code CLI, AWS Bedrock, AgentCore, MCPs, and cloud-native DevOps automation services.
-
Design durable platform components that allow AI agents to operate contextually and securely across build, test, review, and deployment workflows.
Design and Implement Agentic Engineering Workflows
-
Design and build intelligent, agent-driven workflows that assist engineers across the full lifecycle of software delivery, including:
-
Architecture and design validation
-
AI-assisted code generation and pull request review
-
Automated test generation and coverage validation
-
CI/CD validation and policy enforcement
-
Deployment diagnostics and rollback analysis
-
AI-assisted debugging and root cause analysis
-
Develop multi-agent orchestration strategies where specialized agents collaborate to perform complex development and validation tasks.
Define and Operationalize RAG & Agent Orchestration Strategies
-
Help determine Athene’s enterprise RAG strategy, including document indexing, vector store design, contextual retrieval patterns, and evaluation methodologies.
-
Design and implement production-grade multi-agent orchestration patterns using Strands, AgentCore, LangGraph, or equivalent frameworks.
-
Build AI observability and performance monitoring capabilities that ensure agents operate predictably, securely, and efficiently in production environments.
Qualifications and Experience:
-
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, plus 6+ years of experience in backend, systems, or platform engineering, with deep experience as a Software Engineer or similar role and a strong understanding of modern software development life cycles and methodologies.
-
Strong expertise in software architecture and modern SDLC practices, including Git-based workflows, branching strategies, CI/CD systems, and cloud-native deployment models.
-
Strong programming proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript (Node.js) with experience building scalable backend or platform services.
-
Hands-on experience with LLM and agent orchestration frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, AutoGen, LlamaIndex, or similar, including experience with enterprise LLM platforms like AWS Bedrock, Claude Code CLI, and MCP integrations.
-
Experience working in cloud-native and containerized environments, preferably with Docker and Kubernetes.
-
Strong systems thinking and architectural judgment, with experience operating in regulated enterprise environments requiring auditability, traceability, and secure integration patterns, and a proven ability to mentor engineers and influence technical direction across teams.

Which companies in Iowa sponsor visas for AI engineers?
Principal Financial Group, Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Nationwide's Iowa operations, and John Deere's technology divisions have filed H-1B petitions for AI and machine learning roles in Iowa. Agricultural technology companies operating around Ames and Des Moines also sponsor international engineers, particularly for roles in computer vision and predictive modeling tied to precision agriculture.
Which visa types are most common for AI engineer roles in Iowa?
The H-1B is the primary visa for AI engineers in Iowa, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, statistics, or a related field. Candidates already holding F-1 OPT or STEM OPT authorization can work for a sponsoring employer before H-1B filing. O-1A visas occasionally apply to researchers with documented exceptional contributions.
Which cities in Iowa have the most AI engineer visa sponsorship jobs?
Des Moines accounts for the largest share of AI engineer sponsorship activity in Iowa, driven by its concentration of insurance, financial services, and fintech employers. Ames is a secondary hub, where proximity to Iowa State University supports AI research roles and ag-tech startups. Iowa City, home to the University of Iowa, also generates sponsorship activity primarily through healthcare analytics and academic research positions.
How to find ai engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Iowa?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, so you can browse AI engineer roles in Iowa without sifting through positions that don't support international candidates. The platform surfaces opportunities across Des Moines, Ames, and Iowa City in sectors like financial services, agricultural technology, and healthcare analytics where Iowa employers actively sponsor H-1B and STEM OPT holders.
Are there state-specific considerations for AI engineers seeking sponsorship in Iowa?
Iowa does not have state-level visa programs, but the Department of Labor's prevailing wage requirements apply to all H-1B filings regardless of location. Iowa's cost of living means employer-offered compensation packages can differ from coastal tech markets, so verifying that offered wages meet DOL Level I through Level IV thresholds for the specific job site is important before any petition is filed. Iowa State University's strong engineering output also means employer pipelines often prioritize OPT candidates already in the state.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored ai engineer jobs in Iowa?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
