Position Overview
Join RPA’s Streets & Highways Group as a Senior Hydraulics Engineer, providing technical leadership for transportation drainage and water resources design across Montana. In this role, you will lead hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, oversee drainage design, and serve as a key technical resource for roadway projects, supporting infrastructure that serves communities across the region. This position offers a competitive salary based on experience, along with ESOP ownership and a comprehensive benefits package.
What You’ll Do
- Lead hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for transportation projects
- Oversee design of storm sewer systems, culverts, channels, and drainage infrastructure
- Serve as the hydrology and hydraulics lead for select projects
- Review and prepare drainage reports, calculations, and technical documentation
- Provide guidance on bridge hydraulics, scour evaluations, and floodplain analysis
- Coordinate with project managers, roadway designers, and multidisciplinary teams
- Interface with MDT, FHWA, and local agencies on drainage design and approvals
- Participate in field reviews and site investigations
- Support QA/QC processes and technical review of deliverables
- Mentor and support EITs and junior engineers

RPA values individuals who demonstrate initiative, sound engineering judgment, and strong collaboration and communication skills. We are seeking a senior-level engineer capable of independently leading complex hydrology and hydraulics efforts.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field
- Professional Engineer (PE) license (Montana or ability to obtain within 6 months)
- 8+ years of experience in hydrology, hydraulics, or water resources
- Experience with transportation drainage and roadway design
- Experience leading hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and drainage design tasks
- Proficiency with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and stormwater analysis software
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with MDT and/or FHWA projects
- Familiarity with CADD and GIS platforms (Civil 3D, MicroStation, OpenRoads, ArcGIS)
- Experience with stormwater management, culvert design, and floodplain analysis
- Experience providing technical oversight and mentorship
