Position Purpose
Assist instructors in all phases of classroom activity, monitor studios and maintain basic studio functionality for SART courses and studios.
Description
Interns assist instructors in all phases of classroom activity; monitor sculpture, printmaking and photo studios; and serve as mentors for Studio Art students. Interns also perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair, Technical Manager, Exhibition Program Director, and Department Administrator.
Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp
Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience

- Bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College with major or minor in Studio Art.
- Knowledge of the Studio Art Department studios and program.
- Ability to be flexible and learn new skills.
- Strong time management skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Excellent computer skills, in both Macintosh and Windows format.
- Ability to work well with a diverse staff, faculty and student body.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community.

Act as Teaching Assistant for SART classes
- Attends all classroom sessions.
- Meets with the instructor for 45 minutes before and/+ after each class for preparation duties.
- Tracks student class attendance.
- Support students to print, install, and/or guide them to hang their work for midterm and final reviews.

Monitor SART studios during student studio hours
As Architecture Intern
- Clean common desks and tables.
- Keep tool cabinets neat and closed when not in use. Report missing items/repairs necessary to the Fabrication Technician and Technical Manager.
- In the Computer lab, make sure all work surfaces are clean and ask students found in lab with food/drink to leave the lab immediately.
- Check and change paper and inks as needed.
- Make sure working environment is safe and rules followed.
- Work with the Fabrication Manager to assist as needed in the fabrication area.
As Printmaking Intern
- Maintain a clean, dust free, and safe work area. (Organize scrap paper and items not put away in drawers.)
- Keep solvent saturated rags in approved containers and maintain disposal of EHS waste pick up items (“tag and bag”).
- Label all solvents and refill liquids in spray bottles.
- Assist students with cleanup of presses and proper disposal of inky or soiled waste.
- Work with the Print Technician to keep track of inventory (paper + supplies), at the start and end of each term.
- Work with Print Technician to coat and reclaim screens for the screen printing process and sharpen tools with a 3D technician at the end of each term.
- At the end of monitor hours and classes make sure risograph drums are put away, check that water is off on the wash-out sink, presses are left in order (blankets covering bed), turn off all equipment: computers, monitors, printers, scanner, risograph, drying cabinet, exposure unit, and dry mount press.
As Photography Intern
- Assist students with technical processes.
- Replace empty chemical cubes with back-ups.
- Inform Photo/Print Tech Manager when chemicals run low.
- Keep the film developing area clean.
- Remind students to wipe dry film developing equipment and return to the shelf.
- Only Photo/Print Tech Manager or Instructors may sign equipment out to students.
- Replace ink cartridges in printers when necessary.
- Report quantity and color of the cartridge to Photo/Print Tech Manager.
- Keep the lighting studio ready for use.
- Remind students to use the sign-up sheet and clean up.
- At the end of monitor hours check all areas to INSURE all are off: running water, mounting press, computer monitors, (unless a student is using the equipment at 10pm). Remind the student to turn off running water, mounting press, computer monitor when they leave.
As Painting/Drawing Intern
- Follow EHS rules for solvents, paints, waste.
- Keep Gesso and Matte Medium stocked in painting studios.
- Have paper carts stocked for at least 2 class meetings.
- Report any and all issues/shortages to the Technical Manager.
As Sculpture Intern
- Keep tables and floors clean and free of hazards.
- Make sure waste generated is properly disposed of following EHS guidelines.
- Put tools and materials away when completing monitor hours.
- Report any broken tools to the Technical Manager or the Sculpture Technician.
- Keep glue bottles filled.
- Report any and all issues/shortages to the Technical Manager.
- Clean plaster sink and wash out buckets daily.
- Watch approved advanced students working in the metal shop, as necessary.
