Align your portfolio to platform-level work
Google's Android hiring favors engineers with demonstrable experience in performance optimization, framework development, or Jetpack libraries. Framing your projects around system-level impact, not just app delivery, signals you're operating at the scope Google typically sponsors.
Target roles that map to specialty occupation criteria
USCIS requires H-1B positions to qualify as specialty occupations, meaning a specific degree in a related field is a baseline requirement. Android Engineer roles at Google consistently meet this threshold, but your application should show a direct tie between your computer science or software engineering degree and the role's technical scope.
Use Migrate Mate to surface open Android roles at Google
Google posts Android Engineer openings across teams with different sponsorship timelines. Browse Migrate Mate to filter active roles by visa type and seniority level so you're targeting positions that align with your current status and filing window.
Anticipate Google's structured interview process when timing your visa
Google's engineering loop typically spans six to ten weeks from recruiter screen to offer. If you're on OPT with a cap-gap window approaching, flag your timeline to the recruiter early so the H-1B petition can be filed before your work authorization lapses.
Understand how DOL prevailing wage levels affect your offer
Google files Labor Condition Applications with the DOL before sponsoring any H-1B. The wage on your offer must meet or exceed the prevailing wage for Android Engineer roles in your work location, so be prepared for offer terms to reflect those regional benchmarks rather than national averages.
Request clarity on E-3 eligibility if you hold Australian citizenship
Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa, which bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely and uses the same specialty occupation framework. Google sponsors E-3s for engineering roles, so if you're eligible, raise it explicitly with your recruiter before the offer stage to avoid defaulting into the H-1B process.

Find Android Engineer at Google JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Google sponsor H-1B visas for Android Engineers?
Yes, Google sponsors H-1B visas for Android Engineer roles. The company files petitions annually during the H-1B cap season, and Android engineering positions consistently qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS criteria. If you're targeting a cap-subject H-1B, you'll need to be registered in the USCIS lottery by late March for an October 1 start date.
Which visa types does Google commonly use for Android Engineers?
Google sponsors H-1B, H-1B1, and E-3 visas for Android Engineer roles. H-1B is the most common path for engineers from most countries. H-1B1 applies to citizens of Chile and Singapore. E-3 is exclusive to Australian citizens and offers a significant advantage since it bypasses the H-1B lottery. All three require the role to qualify as a specialty occupation, which Android engineering roles at Google consistently meet.
How do I apply for Android Engineer jobs at Google?
Applications go through Google's careers portal, where Android roles are listed by team, such as Android OS, Google Play, or Pixel software. Filtering by engineering level and location narrows the field quickly. You can also browse open Android Engineer positions at Google with visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles specifically matched to your visa type and work authorization status.
What qualifications and experience does Google expect for Android Engineer roles?
Google typically expects a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. For Android-specific roles, hands-on experience with Kotlin, the Android SDK, and architectural patterns like MVVM or Clean Architecture is standard. Senior roles often require experience with large-scale systems, cross-team platform work, or contributions to open-source Android projects.
How do I time my job search at Google around the H-1B filing calendar?
USCIS opens H-1B registration in early March, with petitions filed by April 1 for an October 1 start. That means you need an offer letter and completed I-129 petition paperwork well before March. Starting your interview process with Google in November or December gives you enough runway. If you're on OPT, confirm your authorization end date with your DSO before accepting an offer so Google's legal team can plan the filing accordingly.
