Align your portfolio to public infrastructure writing
NYPA publishes technical reports, legislative communications, and public-facing energy content. Tailor your writing samples to demonstrate experience with policy, infrastructure, or government audiences before applying. Generic portfolios won't stand out in a public sector review.
Target NYPA's content roles through Migrate Mate
Filter open Author positions at NYPA using Migrate Mate to surface roles flagged as visa-sponsorship eligible. This saves time identifying which listings are realistic targets versus roles where sponsorship is unlikely to be offered.
Request clarity on the LCA wage tier early
Before accepting an offer, ask HR which DOL prevailing wage level they're filing the Labor Condition Application at. Government employers sometimes file at Level I or II, which affects your compensation relative to private-sector Author roles.
Prepare your degree equivalency documentation in advance
H-1B specialty occupation requires a U.S. bachelor's degree or equivalent in a directly related field. If your degree is from outside the U.S., obtain a NACES-member credential evaluation before NYPA's HR team submits the I-129 petition to USCIS.
Understand NYPA's procurement-driven hiring timelines
As a public authority, NYPA often runs structured hiring cycles tied to budget approvals and project phases. Starting your application several months before your authorization expires gives you buffer for their internal approvals before any USCIS filing begins.

Find Author at New York Power Authority JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does New York Power Authority sponsor H-1B visas for Authors?
Yes, New York Power Authority sponsors H-1B visas for Author roles. As a large public utility operating under New York State authority, NYPA has an established HR infrastructure for managing USCIS petitions. You'll need to demonstrate that the Author position qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree in a directly related field, which is the standard H-1B threshold.
How do I apply for Author jobs at New York Power Authority?
Author positions at NYPA are posted on their official careers portal. You can also browse open roles flagged for visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate, which filters listings specifically for candidates who need work authorization. When applying, tailor your resume and writing samples to NYPA's public utility context. Highlight any experience with technical writing, government communications, or energy infrastructure content.
Which visa types does New York Power Authority commonly use for Author roles?
NYPA sponsors H-1B and TN visas for longer-term employment, and supports F-1 OPT and F-1 CPT for early-career candidates, which makes it accessible at multiple career stages. TN sponsorship applies to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying professional categories. For permanent residency, NYPA has filed under EB-2 and EB-3 preference categories, which require a PERM labor certification through DOL before the immigrant petition stage.
What qualifications does NYPA expect for Author roles?
Author roles at NYPA typically require a bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, or a related field, alongside demonstrated writing experience. Given NYPA's focus on energy infrastructure and public accountability, experience writing for technical, policy, or government audiences carries more weight than general content creation. Strong candidates show fluency translating complex subject matter into accessible public-facing content.
How do I time my application around visa deadlines?
H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed for an October 1 start date, so if you're on OPT expiring before then, you'll need OPT STEM extension eligibility or a cap-exempt gap bridge. TN status can be obtained at the border or port of entry, which gives more scheduling flexibility. Start conversations with NYPA's HR team at least four to six months before your current authorization expires to avoid gaps.
