Reports to: Dental Office Manager
Rate of pay: $33.18 per hour - $42.00 per hour
Work Schedule: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week. Flexible within Monday - Friday daytime office hours. No evenings or weekends.
Position Summary: The Registered Dental Hygienist is responsible for directly providing oral hygiene and appropriate preventative services to dental patients of the health center, as defined by the New York State Department of Education and the New York State Office of the Professions.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assists in the oral health management of health center patients.
- Assesses patient’s medical history.
- Obtains oral hygiene assessment data and records patient-hygienist transactions in the patient’s dental record, ensuring that the dental record accurately reflects the nature of the contact and the care/treatment provided.
- Provides oral health education and appropriate individual dental counseling for health center patients.
- Provides clinical oral hygiene services, including dental prophylaxis, scaling, sealant application, exposing dental radiographs, periodontal treatment, and fluoride application.
- Integrates appropriate patient dental hygiene care with other healthcare professionals involved in the patient’s healthcare management.
- Performs independent dental procedures as delegated and directed by the dentist per New York State regulations.
- Oversees scheduling of hygiene recall appointments for all dental patients.
- Participates in group conferences and meetings as required.
- Assists with various clinical and administrative functions of the Dental Department as requested by supervisor.
Requirements
- Associate's Degree in Dental Hygiene and valid NYS Dental Hygiene License.
- Current Basic Life Support Certification (training may be provided post-hire).
- Knowledge of eClinical Works preferred.
- Strong organizational and computer skills.
- Ability to effectually interact with patients/caregivers.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships with others.
- Exhibits a high level of professionalism and confidentiality in dealing with patient issues.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to sit/stand for long periods.
- Regular exposure to infectious diseases, blood and airborne pathogens, needle sticks, hygiene issues, and other odors.
- Ability to wear hospital masks, gowns, gloves, close-toed shoes, and other Personal Protection Equipment.
