Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Carpenter
Gather your trade credentials before applying
TN officers evaluate whether your training matches the Carpenter role. Compile your Red Seal certificate, apprenticeship completion papers, or provincial journeyman ticket before you start applications. Gaps in documentation are the most common reason for border delays.
Target employers with active federal contracts
General contractors and commercial construction firms working on federal or federally funded projects are already accustomed to employment verification and foreign national hiring. They have HR processes in place and are less likely to withdraw sponsorship offers mid-process.
Ask employers to confirm USMCA in your offer letter
Your offer letter must reference the specific position and professional category. Ask the employer to state that the role qualifies under USMCA TN status. A vague letter referencing a general labor role can cause a CBP officer to request more documentation at entry.
Search for Carpenter sponsorship roles on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters jobs by TN visa eligibility so you only see Carpenter postings from employers open to sponsorship. Start your search there to avoid spending time on roles where the employer hasn't considered TN hiring.
Understand how Mexican TN processing differs at consulates
As a Mexican citizen, you apply for TN status at a U.S. consulate, not at the border. Consular officers review your trade credentials and employer documents before issuing the visa. Build in four to eight weeks for scheduling and processing before your intended start date.
Request a multi-year employment letter from your employer
CBP can grant TN status for up to three years per admission. If your employer only specifies a one-year contract in the offer letter, officers may limit your status to that period. Ask for a letter covering the full project timeline or expected employment duration.

Find Carpenter JobsCarpenter TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Carpenter occupation actually qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, Carpenter is listed as a qualifying occupation under the USMCA TN category for Canadian and Mexican professionals. The key requirement is that the position involves journeyman-level work supported by a recognized trade certificate, apprenticeship completion, or equivalent documented training. General labor or helper roles without credentials do not qualify.
How does TN visa sponsorship for Carpenters compare to H-1B?
TN is substantially more practical for Carpenters. There is no annual lottery for Canadians, no cap anxiety, and Canadian citizens can get TN status approved at a U.S. port of entry on the day they travel. H-1B requires a bachelor's degree in a specialty field, which most trade-qualified Carpenters don't have. TN is the realistic path for this occupation.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a signed offer letter on company letterhead that states your job title, a description of duties confirming the role is a qualifying Carpenter position, your anticipated length of employment, and confirmation that you will be paid at least the prevailing wage. The letter does not need USCIS approval, but it must be specific enough to satisfy a CBP officer.
Where can I find Carpenter jobs that are open to TN visa sponsorship?
Most standard job postings don't indicate TN visa eligibility, which makes targeting the right employers difficult. Migrate Mate surfaces Carpenter roles from employers who are open to TN sponsorship, so you can focus your applications on positions where the hiring process is already aligned with your status requirements.
Can I switch Carpenter employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you need a new TN authorization tied to the new employer before you start working there. Canadian citizens can obtain this at the border or through a USCIS change of status filing. Mexican citizens typically need to schedule a new consular appointment. Working for a new employer before the new TN is approved is a status violation.
