INTRODUCTION
At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility, we offer our diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, more than 80,000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.
Position Summary
Alstom is seeking an experienced and skilled Technical Proposal Writer to develop proposal narratives for passenger rail projects across North America. In this role you will work closely with our commercial and engineering teams, getting to know our customer needs and our technical solutions. You will serve as a translator between our subject matter experts and executive audiences, ensuring the precision of technical ideas is retained and conveyed in a concise and elegant manner on the written page.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Interface with bid team to understand the bigger picture e.g. customer needs, win themes and our key value propositions
- Work with commercial and technical teams and mine existing Alstom content to source information to develop narratives that align with our strategy.
- Develop and write engaging proposal content and connect with subject matter experts to uncover critical insights, ensuring each narrative is cohesive and carried through to completion.
- Review and edit content generated by subject matter experts to ensure clarity and concision
- Write, review, edit and proofread narratives to ensure ‘one voice,’ and consistent flow, clarity, alignment with customer needs and compliance with RPF narrative requirements.
ABOUT YOU
- Curious and entrepreneurial. You will need to build relationships and seek information from people from a wide variety of different professional and cultural backgrounds across the company.
- Detail oriented. You hate a dangling participle, and you will hunt it down and find it. You love understanding a deeply technical point and working with a subject matter expert to clarity and refine how we present it until it is understandable to your grandmother.
- Proactive. You don’t wait to be told, you see the opportunity to make a narrative better or the need to gather more information to flesh a section out and you go for it.
- Agile. You know how to manage your time and to manage up and down and sideways to keep the project running on time. You can manage multiple deadlines at once without breaking a sweat.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, with strong experience in Communications, English, Journalism, or a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, English, Journalism or related field with experience in Engineering or Science.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with a keen eye for detail.
- Excellent English communication skills – written and verbal (ability to communicate effectively in French is considered an asset).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and collaborative tools (e.g., SharePoint, Teams).
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience writing proposals or technical manuals for US and/or Canadian audiences, preferably in transportation, infrastructure, or engineering sectors.
- Experience in business development at a consulting or transportation engineering or infrastructure firm.
- Experience in journalism and/or technical writing.
- Strong understanding of proposal development processes.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Proposal Writer
Match your degree to the role description
TN eligibility for Proposal Writers depends on a direct connection between your degree field and the writing work. A communications or English degree supports the category cleanly; a business degree alone may draw scrutiny from CBP.
Target employers with active government contracts
Defense contractors, federal consulting firms, and grant-funded nonprofits hire Proposal Writers as core staff, not occasional contractors. These employers file TN letters routinely and understand the sponsorship process without needing education on the visa.
Request a TN support letter before accepting any offer
The employer support letter is the document CBP scrutinizes most. Before signing, confirm your offer letter specifies your degree requirement, job duties tied to professional writing, and a defined employment period of up to three years.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers who sponsor TN visas
Searching broadly wastes time on employers unfamiliar with visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate filters Proposal Writer roles by employer experience with visa filings, so you target hiring managers already prepared to support your application.
Prepare for CBP questions about your writing specialty
Canadian citizens applying at the border should be ready to explain the technical or specialized nature of their proposals. Generic writing work is harder to defend; frame your role around a specific domain like defense procurement, scientific grants, or federal RFPs.
Mexican citizens should file through consular processing early
TN visas for Mexican nationals require a consular appointment rather than border entry. Schedule your U.S. consulate interview as soon as your employer finalizes the support letter, since appointment availability varies significantly by location and season.

Find Proposal Writer JobsProposal Writer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Proposal Writer role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes, Proposal Writer positions can qualify under the USMCA's Writer/Author or Scientific Technician/Technologist categories, depending on the role's focus and your degree. CBP expects your degree field to correspond directly to the writing specialty. Roles tied to technical, scientific, or government procurement writing carry the strongest cases.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Proposal Writers?
The TN visa has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and can be obtained at the border or through a U.S. consulate the same day. H-1B requires employer sponsorship through a lottery with only a roughly one-in-four selection rate. For Proposal Writers with a qualifying degree, TN is a faster and more predictable path.
Where can I find Proposal Writer jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type, so you end up applying to roles where the employer has never handled a TN. Migrate Mate focuses specifically on TN-sponsoring employers, letting you filter Proposal Writer openings by companies already prepared to file the required support documentation.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a support letter on company letterhead that states your job title, a description of duties requiring professional-level writing, your degree and how it relates to the role, your intended start date, and the employment duration. This letter, combined with your degree credentials and valid passport, forms your complete TN application package.
Can I work as a freelance or contract Proposal Writer on a TN visa?
TN status requires a specific employer-employee or client relationship tied to a defined engagement. Pure freelance arrangements with multiple simultaneous clients are difficult to support under TN because each arrangement may require its own status or documentation. Project-based contracts with a single client company are generally more defensible.
