INTRODUCTION
The Nanocomposite Materials and Membrane Manufacturing group in the Applied Materials Division (AMD) has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to develop materials, membranes, and fabrication processes for energy storage applications. The researcher is expected to use solution-based synthesis approaches (e.g., electrospinning, slot-die coating, and 3D printing) to fabricate battery electrodes and solid electrolytes. We are seeking candidates who will be able to design experiments and develop methodologies to design material compositions, ink rheological properties, and coating and drying process conditions to fabricate membrane components with desired physics and ionic transport properties.
As part of the Materials Engineering Research Facilities (MERF), the Nanocomposite Materials and Membrane Manufacturing group perform science-based membrane synthesis and scaleup development by using roll-to-roll manufacturing and machine learning enabled in-line characterization and quality control methods. The group works closely with industry partners and academic collaborators to address real-world manufacturing challenges and develop next-generation energy-storage and conversion solutions.
The candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team with researchers at MERF and collaborators inside and outside Argonne. The candidate is expected to design and conduct experiments, analyze data and explore mechanisms behind the experimental observations, prepare technical reports and manuscripts, and support future project applications.

- Formulate slurry to achieve desirable processibility for coating and printing.
- Study the coating and drying conditions to control membrane microstructures and transport properties.
- Design electrodes, electrolyte, and interfacial layers for solid-state batteries.
- Characterize mass transport phenomenon.
- Develop techniques and strategies for electrochemical measurements and post-mortem analysis.
- Write reports and high impact papers, and present research at conferences.
- Develop or support the development of collaborations with academia and industry.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (typically completed within the last 0-5 years) in chemical engineering, material science, or related fields.
- Demonstrated knowledge in materials synthesis and characterization.
- Demonstrated knowledge in battery (e.g., lithium ion, solid-state, sodium ion, lithium air, lithium sulfur, etc.).
- Demonstrated knowledge of transport property study.
- Experience in ink synthesis and characterization.
- Experience in coating, printing, or any other wet-chemistry deposition techniques.
- Experience using analytical tools, such as X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), spectroscopy (FTIR and Raman), and electrochemical (EIS and battery cycler).
- Publication record with excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability/aptitude to contribute to proposal writing, write reports, and publish journal papers and patents.
- A successful candidate must model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.
- This position requires on-site presence at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois, 5 days per week.
- Skilled oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with blade casting or slot-die coating.
- Experience with electrospinning.
- Experience with aerosol jet printing or 3D printing.
- Highly self-motivated candidate who demonstrates creative and proactive approaches towards scientific problem solving as evidenced by publications and recommendations.
- Proven track record showing the ability to carry out independent and collaborative research in a multidisciplinary team while meeting project milestones and deadlines.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship in Research And Development
Align your credentials to TN categories
R&D roles qualify under multiple TN visa categories including engineer, scientist, and chemist. Your degree must match the specific category your employer cites, so confirm the classification before your offer letter is drafted.
Target employers with recent visa filings
Search Migrate Mate for employers with recent visa filings in research and development roles. Companies experienced with visa sponsorship are more likely to understand work visa requirements and won't need you to explain the TN category from scratch.
Prepare a credential package before interviewing
Gather your degree transcripts, any professional licences, and a detailed CV listing research outputs or patents before your first interview. Employers with no TN experience will ask for these documents the moment they want to extend an offer.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers fast
Searching broadly wastes time on employers who have never sponsored TN workers. Migrate Mate filters R&D roles by sponsorship history, so every application goes to an employer already set up to hire you.
Request an offer letter specifying your TN activity
CBP officers or consular staff will scrutinize whether your described duties match the TN category. Ask your employer to describe your actual research activities, not just your job title, in the offer letter before you travel or apply.
Understand the Mexican consular appointment timeline
Mexican nationals must attend a U.S. consulate interview, and appointment wait times vary by location. Confirm the nearest consulate's current scheduling window with USCIS guidance and build that lead time into your start date negotiation.
Research And Development TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which TN visa categories cover research and development professionals?
R&D professionals most commonly qualify under scientist, engineer, chemist, or computer systems analyst categories, depending on the work. The key is that your degree field must align with the specific TN category your employer designates in your visa petition. A biochemist working in pharmaceutical research, for example, typically qualifies under the scientist or chemist category.
How does TN compare to H-1B for research and development roles?
TN has no lottery and no annual cap for Canadians, making it far more predictable for R&D professionals than H-1B visa, which is subject to an oversubscribed random selection process each spring. TN status is also granted in two-year increments with unlimited renewals, provided you maintain a qualifying job. The trade-off is that TN does not permit dual intent, so it can complicate future green card planning.
Can Canadian R&D professionals apply at the border without an appointment?
Yes. Canadian citizens can present their TN documentation directly at a U.S. port of entry without scheduling a consulate appointment. You'll need your employer's offer letter, your degree credentials, and any supporting documents that confirm your role qualifies under the applicable TN category. CBP makes the final admission decision on the spot, so your paperwork needs to be thorough and clearly organized.
Where can I find research and development employers that sponsor TN visas?
Migrate Mate is built to surface R&D roles at employers with recent visa filings, filtering out employers with no history of hiring international professionals. You can also review job listings to identify roles that meet TN visa requirements—typically requiring a bachelor's degree and falling within eligible professional categories for research and development positions.
Does my R&D employer need to do anything before I can start work on a TN visa?
Your employer must prepare a support letter documenting the position details, your qualifications, and the role requirements. For Canadians, you'll present this letter at the U.S. port of entry along with your passport and proof of Canadian citizenship. For Mexicans, your employer submits the support letter to the U.S. consulate as part of your TN visa application package. The support letter establishes that the position qualifies under TN eligibility requirements for your profession.
