Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Software Development Manager
Match your degree to the technical role
TN officers assess whether your bachelor's degree field aligns with the Software Development Manager duties listed in the offer letter. A degree in computer science, software engineering, or electrical engineering supports the strongest applications. Business or general management degrees alone create problems.
Request a detailed offer letter
Ask your employer to specify that the role requires and exercises engineering or computer-related expertise, not just team oversight. TN officers at the border scrutinize manager titles that read as purely administrative, so the letter must tie technical duties to your credentials.
Target employers experienced with visa sponsorship
Focus your search on companies that have sponsored work visa professionals before, particularly in software engineering roles. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with recent visa filings so you're not spending time on companies unfamiliar with visa sponsorship processes. Since TN sponsorship requires only a support letter (no government filing or certification), employers experienced with any visa program typically understand the documentation and support needed.
Prepare for Canadian border entry without a petition
Canadian citizens apply directly at a port of entry with their offer letter, degree credentials, and TN documentation. No USCIS petition is required. Bring degree transcripts and a resume showing your technical background, not just the management title.
Confirm USCIS I-129 requirements for Mexican citizens
Mexican professionals must file Form I-129 through USCIS before traveling, unlike Canadians who can self-petition at the border. Coordinate with your employer early so the petition is submitted and approved before your intended start date.
Document your technical hands-on work in your resume
Software Development Manager roles that blend coding, architecture decisions, and people management are easier to defend under TN than purely supervisory positions. Your resume should quantify technical contributions alongside leadership responsibilities to support the specialty occupation classification.

Find Software Development Manager JobsSoftware Development Manager TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Software Development Manager role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes, provided the role requires and applies engineering or computer-related expertise as defined under the USMCA occupations list. Officers look at whether the position demands a bachelor's degree in a qualifying field like computer science or software engineering. Purely administrative manager roles without technical duties are harder to defend at the border or through USCIS.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Software Development Manager positions?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and can be obtained at a port of entry for Canadian citizens the same day. H-1B requires a lottery, an employer petition, and months of processing. The tradeoff is that TN does not allow dual intent toward permanent residency, which matters if you plan to pursue a green card while in this role.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for my TN application?
Your employer must provide a detailed offer letter on company letterhead that describes your title, duties, the technical nature of the work, your start date, and your salary. The letter should explicitly connect the job responsibilities to a qualifying TN occupation and state that the position requires a degree in a specific technical field.
Where can I find Software Development Manager jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Software Development Manager roles at employers who support TN visa sponsorship, filtering out companies that lack sponsorship history. This saves significant time compared to applying broadly and discovering late in the process that a company won't support TN status for a manager-level hire.
Can I switch employers on TN status if I receive a better Software Development Manager offer?
Yes. Canadian citizens can present a new offer letter at a port of entry and receive a new TN status tied to the new employer. Mexican citizens need a new I-129 petition approved before starting with the new company. There is no transfer process like H-1B portability, so timing coordination with your new employer matters.
