Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Tax Accountant
Align your credentials to USMCA requirements
TN status for Tax Accountants requires a baccalaureate degree in accounting or a CPA credential. If your degree is from a Canadian or Mexican institution, confirm it's recognized as equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's before your employer files.
Target employers with active TN hiring history
Public accounting firms, corporate tax departments, and regional CPA firms regularly sponsor TN professionals. Filter your search to employers with recent visa filings for accounting roles, which signals they're experienced with work visa sponsorship and won't stall at the offer stage.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsorship roles
Search Migrate Mate to identify Tax Accountant positions where employers have confirmed TN sponsorship. Leads with verified sponsorship intent cut the time you spend chasing roles where the hiring manager doesn't know what TN status means.
Prepare your support letter before negotiations end
Your employer must provide a support letter describing your role, duties, and TN eligibility before you can enter or change status. Draft a template with your job title and degree field early so the letter is ready when an offer is extended.
Understand the difference between border entry and consular processing
Canadian citizens present TN documents directly at a U.S. port of entry with no appointment needed. Mexican citizens must schedule a consulate interview, which adds processing time. Factor this into your start-date negotiation with the employer.
Clarify self-employment restrictions before accepting contractor roles
TN status does not permit self-employment. If a firm offers a 1099 contractor arrangement rather than W-2 employment, that structure won't support your TN. Confirm the employer-employee relationship is clearly established in your offer letter before signing.

Find Tax Accountant JobsTax Accountant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Tax Accountant role qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Tax Accountant is listed as a qualifying occupation under USMCA's TN category for accountants. To qualify, you must hold a baccalaureate degree in accounting or a CPA designation. The role must involve professional accounting duties, not general bookkeeping or clerical tax work, which would not meet the specialty occupation threshold.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Tax Accountants?
For Tax Accountants, TN is significantly more predictable than H-1B. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no multi-month USCIS adjudication wait. Canadian citizens can get TN status at a port of entry the same day. H-1B requires lottery selection, a full USCIS petition, and can take six months or more to activate.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for TN sponsorship?
Your employer needs to provide a support letter on company letterhead that describes your job title, a summary of your accounting duties, the business purpose of the role, and confirmation that you hold a qualifying degree or CPA credential. USCIS or CBP will also review your diploma or credential documentation at the time of application or entry.
Can I find Tax Accountant jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Yes. Migrate Mate lets you search specifically for Tax Accountant roles where employers have confirmed TN sponsorship, so you're not spending time on postings where the employer is unfamiliar with the process. Filtering by sponsorship type at the start of your search is the fastest way to reach a viable offer.
Can a Tax Accountant on TN status switch employers?
Yes, but your TN status is employer-specific. When you change employers, the new company must initiate a fresh TN application. For Canadian citizens, this typically means a new port-of-entry presentation with updated documents. For Mexican citizens, it requires a new consulate appointment. You cannot begin work with the new employer until the new TN is approved.
