Summary
Under general supervision, the Accounting Technician performs routine clerical and technical accounting duties in support of commodity, feedlot, and general accounting operations. This role is responsible for accurate data entry, scale ticket processing, basic accounts payable functions, contract setup and verification, and customer and internal support. The position contributes to the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial and commodity records and reports.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are representative of the position. Other duties may be assigned as business needs require.
- Weigh incoming commodity trucks and direct drivers to appropriate destinations
- Organize, batch, and input scale tickets into accounting and feedlot management systems
- Set up and verify commodity contracts within designated financial systems; ensure accuracy and completeness of contract information
- Perform commodity accounts payable functions, including data entry, coding, verification of scale ticket and contract data, and preparation of payments with appropriate approval
- Complete month end processing for commodity accounts payable and related systems
- Maintain commodity, scale, and accounting files in accordance with retention and departmental standards
- Respond to routine accounting, vendor, and internal inquiries; work with other departments to resolve discrepancies or issues
- Provide routine commodity and accounting reports to management as requested
- Operate general office and accounting equipment and systems efficiently and accurately
- Provide professional customer service, including telephone and in person interactions
- Follow established accounting procedures, internal controls, and record keeping practices
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required
- Associate’s degree (A.A.) or coursework in accounting or business preferred
- Six (6) months to one (1) year of related accounting, clerical, or business experience preferred
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic understanding of accounting and general business concepts
- Ability to accurately enter, verify, and maintain numerical and financial data
- Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, ratios, and percentages
- Proficiency with computers and standard office equipment (calculator, copier, printer, etc.)
- Accurate and efficient 10 key data entry skills
- Ability to learn and use accounting, feedlot, and commodity management systems
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to follow established procedures and work instructions
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while functioning effectively in a team environment
