INTRODUCTION
As a Business Systems Analyst within IT Data Engineering you will be the primary subject matter expert for IDEXX's enterprise data catalog. This includes performing detailed analysis in support of catalog use case development, assisting new users with tool onboarding, creating user stories for implementation, and assisting project manager with user story tracking during curation process.
You will stay up-to-date on Data Catalogue tool capabilities and offerings as well as industry standards for data management. You will also support the catalog integration with Data Security Posture Management tool. You will champion data governance and data management concepts across the organization, including the facilitation of IDEXX Data Steward Guild.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In this role, you will:
- Serve as a Business Systems Analyst for the Alation data catalog, supporting enterprise data governance, data management, and visibility initiatives.
- Develop subject matter expertise in the Alation data catalog, including features, metadata capabilities, and governance use cases, and act as a trusted advisor on how to best leverage the tool.
- Partner with business and technology teams to onboard new groups to the data catalog, identifying the data to be cataloged, applicable catalog features, and expected business or operational benefits.
- Develop use-case–driven user stories (JIRA) focused on adoption, governance outcomes, and measurable value (e.g., reduced time to find data, improved documentation, enhanced visibility).
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define and document data use cases, success metrics, and long-term value propositions for catalog adoption across the enterprise.
- Actively evangelize and promote the value of data cataloging and governance, including delivering roadshows, presentations, training sessions, and one-on-one stakeholder engagements.
- Support enterprise change management efforts related to data governance, helping teams understand expectations, benefits, and responsibilities associated with catalog participation.
- Work closely with data stewards across the organization to support metadata quality, documentation, and business context, ensuring the catalog remains useful and trustworthy.
- Help evolve and mature data stewardship practices, advocating for stewardship principles and encouraging accountability for data documentation and maintenance.
- Contribute to the development and growth of the Data Steward Guild, with an eventual goal of helping lead stewardship standards, practices, and community engagement.
- Assist in the integration of data governance concepts such as data policies, classifications, retention rules, and security metadata within the catalog.
- Partner with security, governance, and architecture teams to support enterprise initiatives such as DSPM integration, data classification alignment, and governance visibility.
- Provide input on best practices for metadata management, including bulk updates, feature selection, and approaches that balance usability with long-term governance needs.
- Build and maintain strong cross-functional relationships to identify, prioritize, and sustain onboarding momentum, navigating competing priorities and stakeholder concerns.
- Apply a working understanding of data concepts (e.g., databases, ETL processes, data warehouses, analytics pipelines) to inform discussions—without directly engineering solutions.
- Continuously learn and apply data management and governance principles (e.g., DAMA/DMBOK), serving as a champion for organizational data maturity.
- Adapt to an evolving governance landscape, demonstrating flexibility, curiosity, and strong communication skills as governance expectations mature and shift from voluntary to required.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
What you will need to succeed:
- 3 to 5 years of experience working as a Business Systems Analyst, Data Analyst, Data Steward, or similar role supporting business or data-focused initiatives.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex data or governance concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to write clear, use-case-focused user stories and manage work through tools such as JIRA.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders (business, analytics, engineering, security, governance) to drive shared outcomes.
- Interest in and willingness to learn and apply data management and data governance principles, including metadata management and stewardship concepts.
- Proven ability to influence without authority, build relationships, and drive adoption through education, advocacy, and change management.
- Comfortable operating in an ambiguous, evolving environment, with a proactive and flexible mindset.
- Ability to translate business needs into governance and documentation outcomes, rather than highly technical system requirements.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple onboarding efforts and stakeholder engagements simultaneously.
LOCATION
Location: driving distance to our Westbrook, Maine HQ with a flexible hybrid requirement of only 8 days per month on-site.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
It would be a plus if you had any of these things:
- Prior experience with data governance, data stewardship, or data management initiatives at an enterprise scale.
- Familiarity with data catalog tools (Alation strongly preferred; others acceptable).
- Working knowledge of data concepts and architectures, such as databases, data warehouses, ETL/ELT processes, analytics pipelines, or cloud data platforms.
- Exposure to or interest in DAMA/DMBOK or similar data management frameworks.
- Experience supporting or leading change management, adoption, or enablement efforts (e.g., training, roadshows, internal evangelism).
- Background in analytics, reporting, or basic SQL, particularly for understanding data contexts or supporting metrics (not for heavy development).
- Experience partnering with security, privacy, or compliance teams, especially around data classification or policy documentation.
- Previous involvement in building or supporting communities of practice (e.g., data steward guilds, governance councils).
