Align your credentials to NERC-relevant engineering work
AEP operates across regulated transmission and distribution systems. Frame your resume around power systems, protection and control, or substation engineering to match the technical scope of roles that historically move through their visa sponsorship pipeline.
Verify your degree qualifies as a specialty occupation
H-1B eligibility requires your degree to directly relate to the role. For Electronic Engineer positions, electrical engineering or a closely related field is the expected match. A misaligned degree can stall USCIS approval even when the employer is willing to sponsor.
Target AEP's grid modernization and infrastructure divisions
AEP's capital-intensive projects in transmission expansion and smart grid development drive consistent engineering hiring. Roles tied to active infrastructure programs tend to move faster through offer and filing stages than backfill positions.
Use Migrate Mate to filter AEP's open Electronic Engineer roles
AEP posts roles across multiple business units, making it easy to miss relevant openings. Use Migrate Mate to surface Electronic Engineer positions at AEP filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility so you're applying to the right roles from the start.
Clarify sponsorship scope during your initial recruiter conversation
AEP sponsors multiple visa types including H-1B and TN. Ask the recruiter early whether the specific role and business unit support your visa category. Some positions within regulated utilities have state-licensing requirements that affect sponsorship timing.
Prepare for PERM labor certification if pursuing long-term status
If your goal is an employment-based Green Card through AEP, the PERM process requires DOL to certify no qualified U.S. workers were available. Starting this conversation early with AEP's immigration team gives you a realistic timeline for EB-2 or EB-3 filing.

Find Electronic Engineer at American Electric Power JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does American Electric Power sponsor H-1B visas for Electronic Engineers?
Yes, American Electric Power sponsors H-1B visas for Electronic Engineer roles. AEP is a large regulated utility with active engineering hiring programs, and H-1B sponsorship is part of their standard process for qualified candidates who need work authorization. You'll want to confirm sponsorship availability for the specific role and business unit with the recruiter, as not every posting will be eligible.
How do I apply for Electronic Engineer jobs at American Electric Power?
Applications go through AEP's careers portal, where Electronic Engineer roles are posted by division and location. You can also browse AEP's open Electronic Engineer positions filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate, which makes it easier to identify roles that align with your visa type before applying. Tailor your application to AEP's power systems and infrastructure focus.
Which visa types does American Electric Power commonly use for Electronic Engineers?
AEP sponsors H-1B visas as the primary pathway for full-time Electronic Engineer hires. The company also supports F-1 OPT and CPT for students completing engineering programs, TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles, and J-1 for certain training or internship placements. For long-term immigration, AEP has supported employment-based Green Card filings through EB-2 and EB-3 classifications.
What qualifications does American Electric Power expect for Electronic Engineer roles?
AEP typically expects a bachelor's degree in electrical or electronic engineering from an accredited university. Relevant coursework or experience in power systems, protection and control, substation design, or transmission and distribution equipment is valued. Professional Engineer licensure or progress toward it strengthens your candidacy. Roles at the senior level often require prior utility industry experience with demonstrated project delivery in regulated grid environments.
How do I plan the timeline for H-1B sponsorship at American Electric Power?
The H-1B cap lottery opens each March for an October 1 start date, so you need an accepted offer well before the registration window. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your OPT expiration date and whether a STEM OPT extension gives you enough runway to bridge to H-1B status. AEP's HR and immigration teams manage the filing, but coordinating early ensures your petition is submitted correctly before the cap closes.
