Align your credentials to AEP's licensing expectations
AEP's engineering roles frequently require or prefer a Professional Engineer license or active EIT status. Getting your credentials evaluated and your PE exam timeline in order before applying signals readiness and removes a common friction point in the hiring process.
Target transmission and distribution openings specifically
AEP's largest engineering headcount sits in transmission and distribution operations. Roles tied to grid infrastructure and system planning have historically driven sponsorship activity in the energy sector, so prioritize those job families when browsing open positions.
Use Migrate Mate to filter AEP's sponsored roles
Not every Electrical Engineer posting at AEP comes with sponsorship. Search AEP on Migrate Mate to surface only the roles where sponsorship has been confirmed, so you're not guessing which applications are worth pursuing.
Clarify your OPT or TN status before the offer stage
AEP sponsors TN visas for Canadian and Mexican engineers under NAFTA-successor rules, and hires on F-1 OPT. Knowing which status you're entering on lets you have a focused conversation with the recruiter about bridging to H-1B before your authorization period ends.
Prepare for PERM timing on permanent residence pathways
EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship for engineers typically requires DOL PERM labor certification, which can take a year or more before the I-140 petition even files. Ask your hiring manager early whether the role is designated for green card sponsorship and what the company's standard timeline looks like.
Document power systems experience in USCIS-friendly language
H-1B specialty occupation petitions for Electrical Engineers require demonstrating that a specific bachelor's degree is normally required for the role. Frame your resume and supporting letters around grid protection, substation design, or load flow analysis rather than broad engineering experience.

Find Electrical Engineer at American Electric Power JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does American Electric Power sponsor H-1B visas for Electrical Engineers?
Yes, American Electric Power sponsors H-1B visas for Electrical Engineer roles. AEP operates as a large regulated utility with consistent hiring needs in power systems and grid infrastructure, and has sponsored international engineers across multiple visa categories. The H-1B is the most common path for full-time engineering hires who need employer-sponsored work authorization.
How do I apply for Electrical Engineer jobs at American Electric Power?
Open Electrical Engineer positions at AEP are posted on the company's careers site. To find roles that specifically include visa sponsorship, browse AEP's profile on Migrate Mate, which filters for sponsored positions. Tailor your application to the technical domain of the role, whether that's transmission, distribution, or substation engineering, since AEP hires across all three.
Which visa types does American Electric Power sponsor for Electrical Engineers?
AEP sponsors several visa categories for Electrical Engineers, including H-1B, TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), F-1 OPT and CPT (for students on STEM programs), J-1, and permanent residence pathways through EB-2 and EB-3. The right category depends on your nationality, degree status, and whether you're pursuing temporary work authorization or a Green Card.
What qualifications does AEP look for in Electrical Engineer candidates?
AEP typically expects a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field. Roles in transmission and distribution often prefer candidates with power systems coursework, knowledge of protective relay schemes, or substation design experience. EIT certification is valued, and some senior roles list Professional Engineer licensure as a requirement. Graduate degrees can strengthen applications for specialized planning or research positions.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for an AEP Electrical Engineer role?
Timeline depends on the visa type. H-1B standard processing through USCIS runs three to six months, with premium processing available for a faster decision. TN status for Canadian nationals can be obtained at the border on the same day as your start date. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 typically runs one to three years before an immigrant visa becomes available, depending on your country of birth.
