About Redwood Materials
Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017, we're delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.
Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer, EPC
Redwood Materials is seeking a Staff High Voltage Electrical Engineer to join our EPC team. This role is central to the design of high voltage electrical infrastructure to support our mission. Our mission is to build a sustainable circular economy for lithium-ion batteries by transforming recycled materials into high-quality inputs for new batteries.
Responsibilities will include:
- Lead the design of high voltage AC electrical systems, specifically for industrial substations (69kV to 345kV) and their integration with upstream transmission lines and downstream MV distribution
- Review and evaluate the design of existing substations to provide recommendations for improving reliability and stability
- Develop single-line diagrams, physical layout and design, protection and control systems, relay design and coordination, and grounding plans for substations
- Perform grid simulation and stability studies using industry standard tools such as PSSE, PSLF, PSCAD, ASPEN OneLiner and similar software
- Interface with utilities and ISO/RTOs to support interconnection studies, permitting, and compliance for new renewable and BESS projects
- Perform short circuit, load flow, and arc flash studies
- Develop relay settings using SEL AcSELerator or equivalent software
- Evaluate and select high voltage equipment including switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, reactors, PTs, CTs, and protection relays
- Serve as Electrical Engineer of Record for assigned projects
- Lead code compliance reviews (NEC, IEEE, NESC, NFPA) and provide technical guidance to internal teams
- Collaborate with civil and structural engineers on substation layout, foundations, and site development
- Support facilities, construction and commissioning teams with field engineering, testing, and troubleshooting
- Review vendor submittals, RFIs, and shop drawings for technical accuracy
- Participate in technical bid evaluations and identify scope gaps
- Lead R&D efforts to perform feasibility analysis of using medium voltage DC distribution system for integrating BESS with other sources
- Independently manage high voltage design packages from concept through commissioning
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external consultants to align scope, schedule, and budget
- Prepare engineering cost estimates and execution schedules in collaboration with project controls
- Lead technical reviews and design optimization workshops
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team development
- Develop workflows, templates, and standards for high voltage design and simulation
- Support strategic initiatives related to grid integration, renewable energy, and energy storage
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from ABET accredited program
- Licensed Professional Engineer in Nevada or eligible for reciprocity. Must get their PE in Nevada and South Carolina within 2 months of start date
- Minimum 10 years of experience in high voltage electrical design, preferably in EPC environments
- Advanced proficiency in:
- Transmission-level load flow and stability using PSSE and PSLF
- Electromagnetic Transient Simulations using PSCAD, EMTC or similar
- SEL Relay Settings using SEL AcSELerator or equivalent
- Relay coordination and fault studies using ASPEN OneLiner or similar
- Power system modeling using ETAP, SKM, or similar
- AutoCAD, Navisworks, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office
- Preferred proficiency in:
- Design of HVDC systems and converter station
- Strong understanding of protection and control systems, SCADA, and substation automation
- Highly motivated, proactive, and detail oriented
- Ability to communicate effectively through verbal, written, and visual formats
- Field experience in construction and commissioning of high voltage systems is highly preferred
- A passion for sustainability and making the world a better place!
The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Tailor your resume to battery manufacturing systems
Redwood Materials focuses on lithium-ion battery recycling and refining, so highlight experience with power electronics, electrochemical systems, or process automation. Generic electrical engineering resumes get filtered fast in specialized manufacturing hiring pipelines.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles by visa type
Redwood Materials posts Electrical Engineer openings across several sites, but not every listing flags sponsorship eligibility. Use Migrate Mate to browse only the roles where Redwood has confirmed sponsorship history for your specific visa category.
Get your credentials evaluation done early
If your engineering degree is from outside the United States, a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization is often required before USCIS or DOL can process your petition. Starting this before you receive an offer saves two to four weeks in your timeline.
Understand how OPT cap-gap affects your start date
If you're on F-1 OPT and selected in the H-1B lottery, USCIS cap-gap protection extends your work authorization through September 30. Confirm your OPT expiry and cap-gap window with Redwood's HR team before accepting an offer with a specific start date.
Ask about internal transfer options at the offer stage
Redwood operates multiple facilities in Nevada and other states. If your preferred site has a slower hiring pace for Electrical Engineers, asking about transfers or rotational assignments at the offer stage can open sponsorship pathways that aren't visible in job postings.

Find Electrical Engineer at Redwood Materials JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Redwood Materials sponsor H-1B visas for Electrical Engineers?
Yes, Redwood Materials sponsors H-1B visas for Electrical Engineer roles. Electrical engineering is a specialty occupation under USCIS definitions, which means it meets the degree-requirement threshold the H-1B demands. Redwood has a consistent record of filing petitions for engineering functions, so H-1B sponsorship for this role is well-established rather than case-by-case.
How do I apply for Electrical Engineer jobs at Redwood Materials?
Applications go through Redwood Materials' careers page, where Electrical Engineer openings are listed by facility and function. You can also find and filter sponsorship-eligible roles using Migrate Mate, which surfaces Redwood's open positions alongside verified sponsorship history by visa type. Tailor your application to battery manufacturing or recycling systems experience, as those are Redwood's core operational areas.
Which visa types does Redwood Materials commonly use for Electrical Engineer roles?
Redwood sponsors H-1B and E-3 visas for Electrical Engineers, along with F-1 OPT and CPT for students and recent graduates. TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. For candidates pursuing permanent residence, Redwood has also sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways for engineering positions.
What qualifications does Redwood Materials expect for sponsored Electrical Engineer roles?
Most Electrical Engineer openings at Redwood require a bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering or a closely related field, which also satisfies the specialty occupation requirement for H-1B and E-3 sponsorship. Practical experience with power systems, battery technology, or manufacturing process controls is frequently listed. Roles tied to process automation or electrochemical systems tend to carry more specific technical requirements.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for an Electrical Engineer at Redwood Materials?
For H-1B petitions filed in the regular cap season, the timeline runs from lottery registration in March to an October 1 start date. E-3 processing through a U.S. consulate typically takes two to six weeks after the Labor Condition Application is certified by DOL. F-1 OPT is faster but requires planning around your program end date. Align your offer acceptance timing with whichever category applies to you.
