Align your credentials to Johnson Controls' systems
Johnson Controls hires Electrical Engineers for specific platforms like Metasys, Simplex, and York HVAC controls. Highlighting hands-on experience with building automation systems or industrial power distribution in your resume signals direct fit before the sponsorship conversation starts.
Target roles with PERM-eligible hiring patterns
Johnson Controls sponsors both H-1B and Green Card pathways for engineering roles. Identifying openings that mention EB-2 or EB-3 eligibility in the job description tells you the employer is already prepared to run the full PERM labor certification process for that position.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Electrical Engineer roles
Not every Johnson Controls engineering posting is open to visa sponsorship. Use Migrate Mate to filter active Electrical Engineer roles specifically confirmed for sponsorship so you're applying where your immigration status won't disqualify you late in the process.
Prepare your degree equivalency documentation early
Johnson Controls engineering roles typically require a bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or a related field. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before your first interview so you're ready when HR asks.
Understand the H-1B cap timing relative to your OPT
If you're on F-1 OPT, your employer must file your H-1B petition by April 1 for an October 1 start. Work backward from your OPT expiration date and confirm Johnson Controls' HR team is aware of your timeline before an offer is extended.
Clarify TN eligibility if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship
Electrical Engineering is a qualifying TN profession under the USMCA. If you're Canadian or Mexican, ask the recruiter about TN sponsorship specifically. It's faster than H-1B, cap-exempt, and Johnson Controls' manufacturing roles commonly fit the required specialty occupation criteria.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Johnson Controls sponsor H-1B visas for Electrical Engineers?
Yes, Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for Electrical Engineers. The company has a consistent history of filing H-1B petitions for engineering roles across its building technologies, HVAC, and industrial controls divisions. Sponsorship is not guaranteed for every open role, so confirm visa support directly with the recruiter before advancing in the interview process.
How do I apply for Electrical Engineer jobs at Johnson Controls?
You can search for Electrical Engineer openings directly on the Johnson Controls careers site or use Migrate Mate to browse roles already filtered for visa sponsorship eligibility. When applying, tailor your resume to specific product lines or systems mentioned in the job description, such as building automation or power distribution, since Johnson Controls' engineering teams are typically organized around technical specializations.
Which visa types does Johnson Controls commonly use for Electrical Engineer roles?
Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas as the primary pathway for Electrical Engineers, and also supports F-1 OPT and CPT for students in qualifying programs. For longer-term permanent residence, the company has sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card petitions through the PERM labor certification process. Canadian and Mexican nationals may also be eligible for TN visa status, which is cap-exempt and faster to obtain.
What qualifications does Johnson Controls expect from Electrical Engineer candidates?
Johnson Controls typically requires a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field. For roles involving building automation or controls, experience with systems like Metasys, fire alarm infrastructure, or low-voltage electrical design is commonly expected. Senior roles often require PE licensure or progress toward it. International candidates should have a credential evaluation ready if their degree was earned outside the United States.
How do I navigate the visa filing timeline after receiving an offer from Johnson Controls?
Once you have an offer, Johnson Controls' HR team typically engages an immigration attorney to begin the process. For H-1B, USCIS registration opens in March with an October 1 start date, so timing your offer relative to that window matters. If you're on OPT with an April 17 cap-gap risk, confirm that your start date and petition filing align with USCIS deadlines to avoid a gap in work authorization.
