Translate your credentials into U.S. equivalents
If you hold an electrical license or trade qualification outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before applying. Johnson Controls' hiring teams assess candidates against U.S. journeyman or master electrician benchmarks for control and low-voltage work.
Target facilities-heavy Johnson Controls divisions first
Johnson Controls staffs Control Electricians across its building technologies and solutions divisions, particularly at sites supporting HVAC and fire systems. Roles tied to ongoing service contracts at manufacturing plants tend to have more consistent sponsorship support than project-based postings.
Certify your PLC and controls experience before the interview
Johnson Controls' Control Electrician roles frequently require hands-on experience with programmable logic controllers and building automation systems. Documenting specific platforms you've worked with, such as Metasys or Facility Explorer, strengthens your application before you reach the technical screening stage.
Clarify sponsorship scope during the offer stage
Ask your Johnson Controls recruiter whether the role supports both initial H-1B filing and long-term Green Card sponsorship under EB-2 or EB-3. Some facilities-based positions sponsor status changes but require PERM labor certification, which can take 18 to 24 months to complete.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Control Electrician postings
Johnson Controls posts Control Electrician openings across multiple U.S. regions, and availability shifts with service contract cycles. Use Migrate Mate to filter active Johnson Controls postings by visa type so you're only applying to roles where sponsorship is confirmed.
Align your OPT or CPT start date with project timelines
If you're on F-1 OPT or CPT, coordinate your authorization window with Johnson Controls' project intake cycles. Controls work at manufacturing sites often ramps up seasonally, and starting mid-project can complicate the transition to an H-1B petition before your OPT grace period ends.

Find Control Electrician at Johnson Controls JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Johnson Controls sponsor H-1B visas for Control Electricians?
Yes, Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for Control Electrician roles, though availability depends on the specific division and facility. Positions tied to building automation and HVAC controls within their technologies and solutions segment are the most likely to carry sponsorship. Confirm sponsorship support directly with the recruiter after receiving a conditional offer, before the H-1B filing window opens each April.
How do I apply for Control Electrician jobs at Johnson Controls?
Apply through Johnson Controls' careers portal, where postings are listed by region and service line. Filter for Control Electrician or Controls Technician titles within the building technologies segment. You can also browse verified sponsorship-eligible openings on Migrate Mate, which surfaces Johnson Controls postings filtered by visa type so you avoid roles that don't support international candidates.
Which visa types does Johnson Controls commonly use for Control Electrician roles?
Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and J-1 visas for technical and trades roles including Control Electricians. For longer-term pathways, the company also files EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa petitions, which typically involve PERM labor certification. Canadian and Mexican nationals in skilled trades should ask specifically about TN eligibility, which allows faster processing without the H-1B lottery.
What qualifications does Johnson Controls expect for Control Electrician candidates?
Johnson Controls typically looks for candidates with journeyman-level electrical experience, hands-on knowledge of building automation systems, and familiarity with low-voltage controls and PLC programming. Experience with Johnson Controls' own platforms, such as Metasys, is an advantage. A degree in electrical technology or a related field strengthens H-1B specialty occupation eligibility, though trade qualifications with equivalent documented experience are also considered.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Control Electrician at Johnson Controls?
Timeline depends on visa type. H-1B petitions are filed in April for October 1 start dates, so expect a gap of up to six months between offer and authorization if you're not already in status. TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals can be processed at the border within a day. EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM typically runs 18 to 36 months from initiation, depending on DOL processing backlogs and your country of birth.
