Align your credentials to controls engineering
Johnson Controls Systems Engineer roles typically require proficiency in building automation systems, PLCs, or HVAC controls. Certify your degree equivalency early and gather documentation that maps your engineering background directly to these technical domains.
Target postings that list LCA-covered locations
Johnson Controls operates service branches and project sites across multiple states. Roles tied to a specific branch office have a Labor Condition Application filed with DOL for that worksite, so identify which geographic locations align with your target team before applying.
Distinguish F-1 OPT from H-1B sponsorship timelines
If you're on OPT, cap-subject H-1B registration opens each March for an October 1 start. Systems Engineer roles at Johnson Controls can bridge that gap through OPT extension, but confirm your role qualifies as STEM-designated before counting on the 24-month extension.
Clarify sponsorship scope during offer negotiation
Manufacturing employers often sponsor H-1B transfers but handle PERM green card sponsorship case by case. Ask directly whether the Systems Engineer offer includes long-term immigrant visa support, not just initial nonimmigrant status, before accepting.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsorship roles
Not every Johnson Controls Systems Engineer posting explicitly states sponsorship availability. Use Migrate Mate to surface roles where Johnson Controls has an active visa sponsorship history for this function, so you focus your applications where the pathway is established.
Prepare a project portfolio tied to Johnson Controls systems
Hiring teams for Systems Engineer roles at Johnson Controls evaluate hands-on experience with building management systems and commissioning workflows. Documenting specific project outcomes, such as controls integration or energy optimization work, strengthens your case for specialty occupation status under H-1B criteria.

Find Systems Engineer at Johnson Controls JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Johnson Controls sponsor H-1B visas for Systems Engineers?
Yes, Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for Systems Engineer roles. The company has a consistent track record of filing H-1B petitions for engineering functions, including building automation and controls positions. Because Systems Engineer roles require specialized technical knowledge, they generally satisfy USCIS specialty occupation requirements, which strengthens the petition. Confirm sponsorship intent with the recruiter before advancing through the interview process.
How do I apply for Systems Engineer jobs at Johnson Controls?
Applications go through Johnson Controls' careers portal at johnsoncontrols.com/careers. Search by role title and filter by location, since Systems Engineer openings are spread across branch offices and regional teams. You can also browse verified sponsorship-eligible openings on Migrate Mate, which surfaces Johnson Controls postings filtered for international candidates. Tailor your resume to highlight building automation, controls platforms, and any commissioning or integration project experience.
Which visa types does Johnson Controls commonly use for Systems Engineer roles?
Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas most frequently for Systems Engineers, but also supports F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates, TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering categories, and J-1 visas for certain training-track positions. For longer-term pathways, the company has pursued EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for engineering staff, though PERM-based cases are typically handled on a role-by-role basis rather than as a blanket policy.
What qualifications does Johnson Controls expect for sponsored Systems Engineer roles?
Johnson Controls typically looks for a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field. Practical experience with building automation systems, HVAC controls, or industrial control platforms carries significant weight. Familiarity with Johnson Controls' own Metasys or Facility Explorer systems is a differentiator. USCIS requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation, so your degree field must map directly to the technical scope of the specific position.
How do I time my H-1B sponsorship if I receive a Systems Engineer offer from Johnson Controls?
H-1B cap-subject registrations open each March for an October 1 start date, so the timing of your offer relative to that window matters. If you're on F-1 OPT when you receive an offer, you can begin work immediately and remain authorized through the cap gap if your OPT expires between April 1 and September 30. Johnson Controls would file the H-1B petition during the registration period and request premium processing through USCIS if a faster approval decision is needed.
