Align your credentials to Johnson Controls specifications
Johnson Controls hires Electrical Controls Engineers across HVAC, fire and security, and building automation systems. Document hands-on experience with PLCs, SCADA systems, or low-voltage controls so your background maps directly to their project portfolios before you apply.
Target roles in facility-heavy regional markets
Johnson Controls staffs controls engineers near large commercial and industrial installation sites. Search for openings tied to specific metro service branches, not just headquarters, since regional offices often have more active hiring cycles and faster hiring decisions.
Confirm your visa type fits the offer structure
Johnson Controls sponsors multiple visa categories for this role. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm the role qualifies as STEM so you can file a 24-month extension before your initial 12 months expire, giving both you and the employer runway for H-1B sponsorship.
Front-load your H-1B timeline planning
The H-1B cap registration window opens in March, with an October 1 start date if selected. Coordinate your offer acceptance and start date with Johnson Controls HR well in advance so the USCIS petition is filed without relying on premium processing as a backup.
Understand how PERM shapes your long-term path
For EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, Johnson Controls must complete DOL's PERM labor certification before filing your immigrant petition. This process can take 12 to 18 months, so raise green card sponsorship in offer negotiations early rather than treating it as a later conversation.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active openings
Electrical Controls Engineer roles at Johnson Controls are distributed across dozens of locations and updated frequently. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Johnson Controls openings that include visa sponsorship, so you're applying to positions where the pathway is already confirmed.

Find Electrical Controls Engineer at Johnson Controls JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Johnson Controls sponsor H-1B visas for Electrical Controls Engineers?
Yes, Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for Electrical Controls Engineers. The role qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS guidelines given the degree requirements in electrical engineering or a related field. Sponsorship is tied to a specific job offer, so you'll need an active position before the company can file a petition on your behalf.
How do I apply for Electrical Controls Engineer jobs at Johnson Controls?
Applications go through Johnson Controls' careers portal. You can also browse Electrical Controls Engineer openings that include visa sponsorship through Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for roles where sponsorship is confirmed. Tailor your resume to highlight controls systems experience relevant to Johnson Controls' product lines, particularly building automation, HVAC controls, and industrial electrical systems.
Which visa types does Johnson Controls commonly use for Electrical Controls Engineers?
Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B and TN visas for active employment, along with F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates. For permanent residence, the company uses the EB-2 and EB-3 employment-based Green Card pathways, which require DOL PERM labor certification. J-1 sponsorship is also available in select cases, typically for exchange or training arrangements.
What qualifications does Johnson Controls expect for Electrical Controls Engineer roles?
Johnson Controls typically requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, systems engineering, or a closely related field. Practical experience with PLCs, control panel design, low-voltage systems, or building automation platforms like Metasys is valued. For H-1B purposes, your degree must be directly relevant to the specific role, so a general engineering background without controls exposure may face additional USCIS scrutiny.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Johnson Controls controls engineering role?
Timeline depends heavily on visa type. F-1 OPT authorization through USCIS can take two to three months, so apply early. H-1B sponsorship follows the annual cap cycle, meaning an October 1 start date is standard if you enter through the lottery. TN status for Canadian and Mexican nationals can be obtained at the border or port of entry on the day of travel, making it significantly faster.
