Align your degree to the specific role
Johnson Controls engineering postings typically require a degree in mechanical, electrical, or systems engineering. Make sure your credentials directly match the listed discipline, since specialty occupation approval depends on that field-to-role alignment during H-1B adjudication.
Target roles in building technology and controls
Johnson Controls concentrates engineering hiring in HVAC systems, fire and security controls, and industrial automation. Focusing your search on these verticals improves your odds of landing a team that regularly processes sponsorship for technical contributors.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsoring roles
Not every Johnson Controls engineering posting actively supports sponsorship. Use Migrate Mate to filter for open roles where the company has a verified sponsorship history, so you avoid applying to positions that won't move forward with visa filing.
Clarify OPT or CPT coverage before your start date
If you're on F-1 status, confirm with the hiring team whether the role qualifies for STEM OPT extension. Johnson Controls manufactures technology-integrated systems, and many of its engineering functions fall under STEM-designated SOC codes that support a 24-month extension.
Ask about the H-1B filing timeline during the offer stage
The H-1B cap registration window opens in March each year, with an October 1 start date if selected. If your offer arrives after April, ask HR directly whether the company will file for the next fiscal year cycle or use a cap-exempt pathway in the interim.
Understand how PERM affects your long-term sponsorship
Johnson Controls sponsors both EB-2 and EB-3 green cards for engineering roles. PERM requires the employer to run DOL-supervised recruitment before filing, so ask during negotiations whether the company initiates PERM concurrently with your H-1B or waits until a later tenure milestone.

Does Johnson Controls sponsor H-1B visas for Engineers?
Yes, Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying engineering roles. The company files both new cap-subject petitions during the annual USCIS registration window and extensions for existing employees. Engineering positions in mechanical systems, controls, and building technology are among the functions that regularly appear in sponsorship filings, though not every open role is guaranteed to include sponsorship.
How do I apply for Engineering jobs at Johnson Controls?
You can search and apply through Johnson Controls' careers portal directly, or use Migrate Mate to browse open engineering roles already filtered for visa sponsorship history. When applying, tailor your resume to the specific engineering discipline listed, whether that's HVAC systems, fire and security, or industrial controls, since hiring managers review for direct technical alignment before moving candidates to interviews.
Which visa types does Johnson Controls commonly use for Engineering roles?
Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for most full-time engineering hires and supports TN status for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering classifications. The company also works with F-1 OPT and CPT candidates during early career roles, and offers EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa sponsorship for engineers pursuing a Green Card through employment-based permanent residence.
What qualifications does Johnson Controls expect for sponsored Engineering positions?
Most sponsored engineering roles at Johnson Controls require a bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline, such as mechanical, electrical, computer, or systems engineering. Roles in building automation and controls often expect familiarity with HVAC systems, BACnet or Modbus protocols, or PLC programming. For H-1B sponsorship, USCIS requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation, so your degree field must directly relate to the job duties.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for an Engineering hire at Johnson Controls?
Timeline depends on the visa type. H-1B cap filings follow a fixed federal calendar, with registration in March and employment starting October 1 at the earliest, meaning six or more months of lead time. TN status for Canadians can be obtained at the border in a single day. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship typically takes one to three years or longer depending on your country of birth and priority date.
