Align your credentials to Johnson Controls specializations
Johnson Controls hires mechanical engineers heavily for HVAC, chiller systems, and building controls. Tailor your resume to highlight thermodynamic analysis, fluid mechanics, or controls experience so your background maps directly to their product lines.
Target roles in manufacturing and field engineering
Johnson Controls posts Mechanical Engineer openings across both plant-based manufacturing and field service functions. Roles tied to physical product development or HVAC commissioning tend to have clearer specialty occupation justifications, which strengthens your H-1B petition.
Confirm OPT eligibility before your interview stage
If you're on F-1 OPT, verify your STEM OPT extension is authorized by USCIS before accepting an offer. Johnson Controls participates in E-Verify, which is required for STEM OPT employers, so your authorization needs to be in place before your start date.
Ask about PERM timing during the offer conversation
Johnson Controls sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards, but PERM labor certification can take one to two years before USCIS even begins adjudicating the immigrant petition. Raise this timeline early so you understand when permanent residency proceedings could realistically begin.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Mechanical Engineer openings by visa type
Johnson Controls lists Mechanical Engineer roles across many locations, and not every posting reflects the same sponsorship scope. Use Migrate Mate to filter live openings by the specific visa type you need so you're only applying where your situation fits.
Prepare a degree equivalency letter if your credential is non-U.S.
USCIS requires a qualifying bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field for H-1B specialty occupation. If your degree is from outside the United States, get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator before your employer files Form I-129.

Find Mechanical Engineer at Johnson Controls JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Johnson Controls sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers?
Yes, Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers. The company has an established process for filing H-1B petitions, and Mechanical Engineer roles typically satisfy the specialty occupation requirement given the degree-level engineering knowledge the work demands. Your employer will file Form I-129 with USCIS, and timing depends on whether you need cap-subject lottery selection or qualify for a cap-exempt filing.
How do I apply for Mechanical Engineer jobs at Johnson Controls?
Applications go through Johnson Controls' careers portal, where you can search by job function and location. To find openings filtered specifically by visa sponsorship type, Migrate Mate lists active Johnson Controls Mechanical Engineer roles so you can identify postings that match your authorization needs before applying. Prepare to speak to HVAC, controls, or manufacturing experience specific to their product lines in your interview.
Which visa types does Johnson Controls use for Mechanical Engineer roles?
Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for specialty occupation engineers, F-1 OPT and CPT for students and recent graduates, TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering categories, and J-1 for certain training or exchange roles. The company also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways, including PERM labor certification, for engineers moving toward permanent residency.
What qualifications does Johnson Controls expect for Mechanical Engineer positions?
Most openings require a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field. Roles tied to HVAC systems, chillers, or building automation often call for familiarity with thermodynamics, fluid systems, or controls engineering. Some positions ask for professional engineering licensure or relevant certifications. For H-1B purposes, your degree field needs to correspond directly to the duties of the specific role you're hired for.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Mechanical Engineer at Johnson Controls?
H-1B cap-subject petitions follow a fixed federal calendar: registration opens in March, lottery selection happens shortly after, and approved petitions have an October 1 start date. If you're already in H-1B status or qualify for a cap-exempt transfer, filing and USCIS adjudication typically take two to six months without premium processing. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship adds a separate multi-year process on top of any nonimmigrant visa timeline.
