Certify your trades credentials before applying
Johnson Controls prioritizes candidates with verifiable technical certifications, such as EPA 608 for refrigerants or NATE for HVAC systems. Having these certified and documented before you apply removes a common bottleneck in the offer and sponsorship approval process.
Target open requisitions tied to service contracts
Johnson Controls wins large building management and service contracts that create predictable maintenance headcount. Roles attached to contract-driven teams are more likely to have budget-approved sponsorship, so filter your applications toward those site-specific or facilities-linked postings.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active openings
Maintenance postings at Johnson Controls move quickly and are scattered across regions. Use Migrate Mate to filter for visa-sponsoring roles at Johnson Controls specifically, so you're applying to positions where sponsorship is already part of the hiring conversation.
Align your resume to the LCA job description
When Johnson Controls files a Labor Condition Application with DOL for your role, the job duties listed must match what you actually do. Make sure your resume language mirrors the specific maintenance tasks in the job posting to avoid mismatches during filing.
Ask specifically about the H-1B cap-exempt pathway
Some Johnson Controls maintenance roles are placed at facilities affiliated with universities or nonprofits, which can qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filing. If a site you're targeting has that affiliation, USCIS allows filing outside the annual lottery cycle entirely.

Find Maintenance at Johnson Controls JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Johnson Controls sponsor H-1B visas for Maintenances?
Yes, Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Maintenance roles, particularly positions requiring specialized technical knowledge such as HVAC systems, building automation, or industrial controls. Sponsorship is tied to specific roles and locations rather than being a blanket company policy, so confirming sponsorship availability with the hiring team early in the process is important.
How do I apply for Maintenance jobs at Johnson Controls?
You can apply through Johnson Controls' careers portal or find visa-sponsoring openings filtered by role and employer on Migrate Mate. When applying, tailor your resume to reflect the specific systems and equipment listed in the job description. Indicating your visa status in the application or early screening call helps Johnson Controls' HR team plan the sponsorship timeline from the start.
Which visa types does Johnson Controls commonly use for Maintenance roles?
Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for specialty occupation maintenance positions, as well as TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering or technical classifications. F-1 OPT and CPT are used for students or recent graduates, and EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card pathways are available for longer-term employees transitioning from nonimmigrant status.
What qualifications does Johnson Controls expect for sponsored Maintenance positions?
Most sponsored maintenance roles at Johnson Controls require a combination of a relevant technical degree or trade certification and hands-on experience with building systems, HVAC equipment, or industrial automation. Certifications such as EPA 608, NATE, or manufacturer-specific credentials strengthen your candidacy. For H-1B sponsorship specifically, USCIS requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation, which typically means a bachelor's degree or equivalent in a directly related field.
How do I plan my timeline if I need Johnson Controls to sponsor my visa?
If you're targeting an H-1B, the annual cap registration window opens in March, with employment starting no earlier than October 1 of that year. Starting your job search at least six months before that window gives you time to secure an offer and allow Johnson Controls to prepare the petition. TN and OPT transfers move faster, often within a few weeks of an accepted offer, making them more flexible if your authorization is already in place.
