Tailor your resume to Johnson Controls' systems
Johnson Controls' Controls Engineer postings frequently call out Metasys, Facility Explorer, and Johnson Controls-specific BAS platforms. Align your resume to these tools and building automation protocols before applying, so your technical fit is obvious from the first screen.
Pursue a Professional Engineer license early
Johnson Controls regularly lists PE licensure as preferred or required for senior Controls Engineer roles. Starting the licensing process before your job search strengthens your application and signals long-term commitment to U.S.-based practice in a regulated manufacturing environment.
Target roles in Johnson Controls' service branches
Controls Engineer openings within Johnson Controls' service and solutions divisions tend to have more active hiring pipelines than corporate engineering tracks. Filtering by branch type on their careers portal helps you find roles with faster time-to-offer and documented sponsorship history.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsorship roles
Not every Controls Engineer listing at Johnson Controls is open to sponsored candidates. Use Migrate Mate to filter Johnson Controls postings by visa type, so you're only spending time on roles that align with your specific authorization needs.
Clarify TN eligibility before your offer conversation
Canadian and Mexican candidates should confirm their role qualifies under the USMCA TN engineer category before finalizing an offer. DOL's OFLC definition of engineering specialty occupations matters here, and Johnson Controls' HR teams will need the correct occupational classification for your TN paperwork.
Align your PERM timeline with project cycles
Johnson Controls typically initiates PERM-based Green Card sponsorship after an employee demonstrates sustained performance. Understanding that PERM processing at DOL can take 12 to 18 months or longer helps you negotiate sponsorship commitments and project assignments realistically during offer negotiations.

Find Controls Engineer at Johnson Controls JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Johnson Controls sponsor H-1B visas for Controls Engineers?
Yes, Johnson Controls sponsors H-1B visas for Controls Engineers. The company has an established immigration program that supports H-1B filings for engineering roles, including initial cap-subject petitions and renewals. If you're currently on F-1 OPT, Johnson Controls can also file your H-1B cap-subject petition before your OPT expires, provided the role qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS guidelines.
Which visa types does Johnson Controls use for Controls Engineer roles?
Johnson Controls sponsors several visa categories for Controls Engineers, including H-1B, TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals under USMCA), J-1, and F-1 OPT and CPT for students and recent graduates. For long-term employees, Johnson Controls also supports permanent residency through EB-2 and EB-3 employment-based Green Card pathways, typically initiated after an employee has been in the role for a qualifying period.
How do I apply for Controls Engineer jobs at Johnson Controls?
Applications go through Johnson Controls' careers portal at johnsoncontrols.com/careers. Filter by job function (engineering) and location to find active Controls Engineer openings. On each listing, check the job description for sponsorship language. You can also browse Johnson Controls Controls Engineer roles filtered by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate, which narrows results to postings that match your specific authorization status.
What qualifications does Johnson Controls expect for Controls Engineer candidates?
Most Controls Engineer roles at Johnson Controls require a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field. Hands-on experience with building automation systems, HVAC controls, or industrial control platforms is expected. Familiarity with Johnson Controls' proprietary platforms such as Metasys is a strong differentiator. Senior-level roles frequently list Professional Engineer licensure as preferred, and some field-based positions require commissioning experience.
How do I time my application if my OPT is expiring soon?
If your F-1 OPT is within six months of expiring, prioritize Controls Engineer roles at employers like Johnson Controls that have a documented H-1B sponsorship history. USCIS requires H-1B cap-subject petitions to be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start date. If you miss that window, a STEM OPT extension (if eligible) can bridge a 24-month gap, giving you two additional H-1B lottery cycles to secure sponsorship.
