Align your degree field to the role
Lam Research's mechanical engineer openings typically require a degree in mechanical, materials, or related engineering. USCIS defines specialty occupation by direct field alignment, so a degree in an unrelated discipline can trigger an RFE even with strong work experience.
Target semiconductor equipment experience specifically
Lam Research designs capital equipment for wafer fabrication, so candidates with hands-on experience in vacuum systems, precision motion, or thermal management stand out. Framing your resume around hardware development cycles common in the Electronics and Hardware industry sharpens your fit.
Search open roles through Migrate Mate
Lam Research posts mechanical engineer roles across multiple sites and functions. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for open positions that flag visa sponsorship, so you're only spending time on roles where your immigration needs are already accounted for.
Ask about LCA timing before accepting an offer
Your employer must file a certified Labor Condition Application with the DOL before USCIS can process an H-1B petition. Confirm your recruiter understands this sequence, since delays in LCA certification push back your start date and can affect your current status window.
Secure OPT authorization well before your graduation date
If you're on an F-1 visa, USCIS recommends applying for OPT at least 90 days before your program end date. Starting the process late risks a gap between your graduation and authorization to work, which can complicate onboarding timelines with large employers like Lam Research.
Prepare documentation for PERM if targeting a Green Card
Lam Research sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for engineering roles. The PERM labor certification process requires detailed records of your qualifications and duties, so keep certified transcripts, employment letters, and project documentation organized well before your employer initiates the filing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Lam Research sponsor H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineers?
Yes, Lam Research sponsors H-1B visas for Mechanical Engineer roles. The company has a consistent record of filing H-1B petitions for engineering positions across its U.S. sites. Because Lam Research operates in the semiconductor equipment industry, most mechanical engineering roles qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS criteria, which is a prerequisite for H-1B sponsorship.
How do I apply for Mechanical Engineer jobs at Lam Research?
Applications go through Lam Research's careers portal, where roles are listed by site, function, and experience level. Migrate Mate lets you browse Lam Research's open Mechanical Engineer positions filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility, so you can identify the right openings before applying directly. Tailor your resume to semiconductor equipment development and include relevant hardware or systems experience.
Which visa types does Lam Research commonly use for Mechanical Engineer roles?
Lam Research sponsors H-1B, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, TN visa, J-1 visa, and employment-based Green Cards including EB-2 and EB-3 for Mechanical Engineer positions. F-1 OPT and CPT are common entry points for recent graduates, while H-1B and Green Card sponsorship are standard for longer-term employment. TN visa is available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles.
What qualifications does Lam Research expect for Mechanical Engineer roles?
Most openings require a bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical, materials, or a closely related engineering field. Lam Research builds complex semiconductor fabrication equipment, so relevant experience in areas like vacuum systems, precision manufacturing, thermal engineering, or mechatronics strengthens a candidate's profile significantly. Roles at more senior levels often require demonstrated hardware development experience within the electronics or semiconductor industry.
How do I think about timing when targeting a sponsored Mechanical Engineer role at Lam Research?
If you're on F-1 OPT, the 60-day grace period after employment ends is tight, so starting your search early matters. H-1B cap-subject petitions can only be filed once per year, with the lottery in March and employment starting October 1 at the earliest. Confirming sponsorship intent with your recruiter before the offer stage avoids wasted time and protects your status planning.
