Over 90% of our users play games, spending a combined 1.5 billion hours playing thousands of unique titles on Discord each month. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming. We are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to talk and hang out before, during, and after playing games. People come to Discord before, during, and after gaming, and we want to make that experience even better. The Developer Success team is building the tools for game developers to make that happen by harnessing the power of Discord from right within their games. We believe that gaming is better when playing with your friends and aim to foster better and deeper relationships through that. This is also reflected in how we work! Our engineering culture believes that great teams are built through collaboration and trust. Come and join us!
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
What You’ll Be Doing
- Delivering high-quality, high-impact projects that unlock new capabilities for game developers. This could include anything from our web APIs, realtime infrastructure, C++ SDKs, developer portal, or even in the UI. Whatever it takes to get the important thing done.
- Collaborating with the other engineers on your team to write, review, and ship elegant and scalable code. You take pride in the fact that your code will be used by millions and millions of people!
- Leading projects through the whole life cycle: including gathering requirements, breaking down milestones into smaller pieces, building, then shipping the thing.
- Listening and working with our game developer partners to better understand their needs in order to improve our tools. This could mean hopping into partner meetings as a technical expert or working with our DevReal team to answer their questions.
- Working with product managers, designers, and partner managers to cut through ambiguity and find the way forward.
- Using your attention to detail to continually raise the quality bar of the software we write.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years experience as a software engineer.
- Experience with some parts of our tech stack: Python, Typescript/React, or Elixir. You are comfortable switching across stacks or learning new ones.
- You have a sense for product and design. We don’t operate in silos, and you’ll be collaborating closely with cross-functional peers. You should be able to express opinions and collaborate to make something great.
- You take a holistic approach to problem solving. You believe in solving a problem from first principles rather than simply shipping a solution. You learn from your mistakes and work through obstacles with the rest of the team.
- You actively leverage AI coding tools to accelerate your productivity.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with game development. Bonus bonus points if you’re familiar with Unity and/or Unreal.
- Experience with mobile development.
- Experience leveraging a cloud platform (GCP, Amazon, or Azure) to serve as the backend infrastructure for a product.
COMPENSATION

Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only, and do not include equity, or benefits.

Align your portfolio with Discord's stack
Discord's backend runs on Python, Rust, and Elixir with heavy reliance on distributed systems and WebSocket infrastructure. Tailor your GitHub projects and system design examples to reflect experience with real-time, high-throughput architectures before you apply.
Start your OPT application before your program ends
USCIS recommends filing your OPT EAD application up to 90 days before your program end date. If you're on F-1 and targeting a Discord offer, timing your graduation with their recruiting cycle avoids a gap between your start date and work authorization.
Prepare a strong degree-to-role connection early
For H-1B specialty occupation, USCIS scrutinizes whether your degree field directly supports the specific backend role. Document how your computer science or engineering degree maps to Discord's job description before the offer stage, not after.
Browse open Backend Software Developer roles on Migrate Mate
Discord posts backend roles across infrastructure, voice, and data platform teams at different points in the year. Use Migrate Mate to filter open positions by visa type so you're applying to roles where sponsorship is already confirmed, not assumed.
Confirm the PERM timeline if you're targeting a Green Card
Discord sponsors EB-2 and EB-3, but the PERM labor certification process typically takes 12 to 18 months before an I-140 can be filed. Ask about the company's green card sponsorship policy during the offer negotiation stage, not after you've accepted.

Does Discord sponsor H-1B visas for Backend Software Developers?
Yes, Discord sponsors H-1B visas for Backend Software Developer roles. The key requirement is that the position qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards, meaning the role typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Backend roles focused on distributed systems, infrastructure, or platform engineering tend to meet this bar clearly.
Which visa types are commonly used for Backend Software Developer roles at Discord?
Discord supports several work visa categories for backend engineering roles, including H-1B, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, TN, and immigrant pathways including EB-2 and EB-3. F-1 OPT is common for recent graduates entering through internship-to-full-time pipelines. TN applies to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. H-1B covers the broadest range of backend positions long-term.
How do I apply for Backend Software Developer jobs at Discord?
Applications go through Discord's careers page, where backend roles are posted by team, such as infrastructure, data platform, or voice and video. You can also browse and filter Backend Software Developer openings at Discord by visa sponsorship type on Migrate Mate, which makes it straightforward to identify which roles actively support your work authorization before you spend time on a full application.
What qualifications and experience does Discord expect for Backend Software Developer roles?
Discord's backend engineering roles typically require demonstrated experience with distributed systems, high-availability services, and languages like Python, Rust, or Go. For mid-level and senior positions, experience with real-time data pipelines or large-scale API architecture is a strong differentiator. A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or software engineering is the standard baseline, which also supports visa sponsorship eligibility under H-1B specialty occupation rules.
How do I time my application if I'm on F-1 OPT and targeting Discord?
Discord's engineering recruiting tends to ramp up in the first and third quarters. If your OPT authorization window is expiring within six months, prioritize applying early enough that an offer, onboarding, and any STEM OPT extension filing can be completed without a gap. USCIS allows STEM OPT extension applications to be filed up to 90 days before your current OPT expires, giving you a buffer if Discord's hiring timeline runs long.
