Thermal Engineering leads and delivers the development of innovative and compliant thermal design solutions, as well as cross-functional interfaces for computer systems and peripherals. Our team conducts the analysis, feasibility studies and testing of thermal products, instruments, subassemblies and packaging for new and existing products – and then oversees the introduction of design changes to the manufacturing organizations.
As AI growth is accelerating, Dell Technologies is developing ground-breaking technologies and customer-focused solutions to lead the industry. We’re developing best-in class networking, storage, infrastructure, and server products to serve AI, Cloud, High Performance Computing (HPC), Edge and Enterprise workloads.
Join us to do the best work of your career and make a profound social impact as a Principal Thermal Controls Engineer on our Thermal Engineering team in Austin, Texas.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Dell Technologies is seeking a Principal Thermal Controls Engineer to define and architect next‑generation thermal control strategies that enable efficient, reliable cooling for Dell’s most advanced platforms. This role leads development of thermal control algorithms, simulation using Simulink, and definition of firmware requirements guiding BMC/embedded firmware teams. A strong preference will be given to candidates capable of driving digital‑thread workflows and leveraging automation or AI tools to generate, validate, and optimize thermal control data.
You will:
- Architect next‑generation thermal control strategies for Dell PowerEdge servers, storage, AI/HPC, telco, and rack‑level platforms, enabling efficient, reliable, and acoustically optimized cooling
- Develop advanced, model‑based control algorithms using Simulink to manage fans, pumps, cold plates, and power‑thermal interactions across air and liquid cooling systems
- Lead simulation‑driven design by building thermal system models and running scenario‑based analyses to tune algorithms, predict edge cases, and define platform requirements ahead of hardware availability
- Define firmware requirements and interfaces for thermal sensing, telemetry, and control, and partner closely with BMC/embedded firmware teams to ensure accurate implementation
- Drive digital thread and automation initiatives, leveraging AI‑assisted tools to generate and optimize thermal control parameters while serving as a technical authority and mentor across product lines
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 8+ years of experience in thermal controls, systems controls, or related engineering disciplines, with strong domain knowledge of server, storage, or HPC platform architectures
- Expert in model‑based thermal control development, including Simulink and MBSE techniques to link simulation, controls, firmware, and validation workflows
- Deep understanding of thermal and cooling systems, including air and liquid architectures, fans, pumps, sensors, and thermal management components
- Experience with embedded/BMC firmware integration, including Redfish, IPMI, sensor interfaces, and the ability to author clear, detailed firmware requirements and collaborate closely with firmware teams
- Proven technical leadership and communication skills, with experience driving digital thread initiatives and using automation, scripting, or AI‑based tools to generate and validate thermal control parameter tables
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Familiarity with model‑based systems engineering and advanced thermal control methods, such as PID, adaptive or AI‑assisted controls, state‑machine modeling, and using CFD or thermal simulation insights to inform control strategies for high‑power, air‑ or liquid‑cooled systems
- Exposure to digital thread concepts and platform‑level control strategy, including linking simulation, controls, firmware, and validation workflows, as well as using automation, scripting, or AI‑based tools to help generate, validate, or optimize thermal control parameters and support architectural decisions
COMPENSATION
- The base salary range for this position is $144,500-$187,000.

Job Roles at Dell
How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Dell H-1B Visa Sponsorship Jobs USA
Target Dell's core technical divisions
Dell's H-1B sponsorships concentrate in engineering, software development, and IT infrastructure roles. Focus your applications on these divisions rather than generalist corporate functions, where sponsorship approval is less consistent.
Understand Dell's supply chain hiring needs
As a major player in Distribution and Wholesale, Dell hires internationally for supply chain, logistics analytics, and operations roles. Framing your background around these functions can open H-1B sponsorship pathways beyond pure software engineering.
Confirm sponsorship eligibility before applying
Not every Dell job posting explicitly states H-1B sponsorship availability. Use Migrate Mate to filter verified H-1B sponsors and confirm Dell's sponsorship history before investing time in a full application.
Engage Dell recruiters early in the process
Dell's internal recruiters often determine sponsorship feasibility before a formal offer is made. Asking directly during a recruiter screen whether the role supports H-1B sponsorship avoids late-stage surprises and saves time for both parties.
Highlight specialized skills that justify sponsorship
Dell's H-1B petitions succeed when the role requires a specific degree in a specialty field. Clearly connecting your academic credentials to the technical requirements of the job strengthens the specialty occupation case in your H-1B petition.
Apply well ahead of the H-1B cap season
Dell typically files H-1B petitions during the April cap season for October start dates. Starting your job search in the prior fall gives you time to secure an offer and allow Dell's legal team to prepare your petition before the registration window opens.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Dell sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Dell sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying roles across its U.S. operations. Sponsorship is most common in technical functions including software engineering, IT infrastructure, and data analytics, as well as select supply chain and operations positions that require a degree in a specific specialty field.
Which departments at Dell are most likely to offer H-1B sponsorship?
Dell's engineering, product development, and IT organizations are the most active sources of H-1B sponsorships. Roles in cloud infrastructure, software development, cybersecurity, and supply chain analytics regularly appear as sponsored positions. Corporate functions like HR or general management are less likely to support sponsorship because they typically do not meet the specialty occupation requirement.
How do I navigate the H-1B application process at Dell?
Once Dell extends a job offer to an H-1B candidate, the company's immigration legal team files a Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor, followed by an H-1B petition with USCIS. Dell manages this process internally, but you should be prepared to provide detailed education and work history documentation promptly when requested.
How do I find H-1B sponsored jobs at Dell on Migrate Mate?
Migrate Mate verifies sponsorship history for employers including Dell, so you can filter job listings by confirmed H-1B sponsors rather than guessing from job post language. Search for Dell on Migrate Mate to see open roles where sponsorship has been documented, which saves significant time compared to applying broadly and asking about sponsorship later.
What is the typical timeline for H-1B sponsorship at Dell?
For cap-subject H-1B petitions, Dell must register during the March lottery window for an October 1 start date. From registration to start date, the process spans roughly six months at minimum. If you are already in valid H-1B status with another employer, a transfer to Dell can happen outside the cap and move faster, often within one to three months.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at Dell?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
