Verify Your Licensure Eligibility Before Applying
Nebraska and Iowa require state licensure for clinical social work roles. Confirm your LCSW or LSW credentials transfer or that you can pursue licensure on OPT before you apply, since Heartland typically requires licensure for direct practice positions.
Target Roles Matching Your LCA Occupation Code
Heartland's sponsored Social Work roles often fall under SOC codes tied to clinical or school social work. Cross-reference open postings against DOL occupation definitions to confirm the role qualifies as a specialty occupation before investing time in your application.
Start OPT Applications Well Before Graduation
USCIS recommends filing your EAD application up to 90 days before your program end date. For Social Work roles at Heartland, which often involve onboarding timelines tied to client caseload needs, a gap in work authorization can delay your start date significantly.
Ask Directly About H-1B Filing Timelines in Interviews
Healthcare nonprofits like Heartland often initiate H-1B petitions around the April cap-subject window. Confirm early whether your target role is cap-subject or cap-exempt, since Heartland's nonprofit status may qualify certain positions for cap-exempt filing under INA.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Heartland's Sponsored Openings
Search Heartland Family Service on Migrate Mate to browse Social Work roles verified against their sponsorship history. Filtering by visa type lets you focus on postings aligned with your specific status, whether OPT, H-1B, or TN.
Prepare Credential Evaluations for Foreign Degrees Early
If your social work degree was earned outside the U.S., NASW-recognized credential evaluation services can take several weeks. Heartland's HR team will need this documentation before extending an offer for licensed or licensure-eligible roles.

Find Social Work at Heartland Family Service JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Heartland Family Service sponsor H-1B visas for Social Workers?
Yes, Heartland Family Service has sponsored H-1B visas for Social Work roles. As a healthcare nonprofit, certain positions may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filing, which bypasses the annual lottery and allows petitions to be submitted year-round. Whether a specific role qualifies for cap-exempt status depends on how the position is structured and where it is performed, so confirm this with the hiring team early in the process.
Which visa types are commonly used for Social Work roles at Heartland Family Service?
Heartland Family Service has sponsored H-1B visas and also works with candidates on F-1 OPT and F-1 CPT for Social Work roles, making it accessible to recent MSW graduates still on student status. TN visa sponsorship is also available for eligible Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying social work occupations. The right visa type depends on your nationality, degree, and where you are in your career timeline.
What qualifications and experience are expected for Social Work roles at Heartland Family Service?
Most clinical and case management roles at Heartland require at minimum a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), with many positions specifying a Master of Social Work (MSW) for clinical licensure tracks. Nebraska and Iowa require state licensure for independent practice, so expect roles to specify LSW or LCSW eligibility as a condition of hire. Experience working with children, families, or individuals experiencing trauma, housing instability, or behavioral health challenges is commonly emphasized in postings.
How do I apply for Social Work jobs at Heartland Family Service?
You can browse and apply for Social Work openings at Heartland Family Service directly through Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles verified against the company's sponsorship history so you can filter by your visa type. When applying, tailor your resume to reflect direct service experience with the populations Heartland serves, and be prepared to address your work authorization status and any licensure timeline in your cover letter or initial screening call.
How do I plan my timeline when pursuing H-1B sponsorship at Heartland Family Service?
If your role is cap-subject, the H-1B lottery registration window opens in March each year, with petitions filed in April for an October 1 start date. This means you need an offer in hand well before March to align your filing. If you're on OPT, your 12-month authorization period and any STEM extension window should be mapped against this timeline. Cap-exempt roles, which Heartland may qualify for given its nonprofit status, allow year-round filing and remove the lottery risk entirely.
