Get Your Credentials Evaluated Before Applying
If your social work degree is from outside the U.S., have it evaluated by a NACES-approved agency before submitting applications. Sutter Health roles often require a California-recognized MSW, and credential gaps discovered late can delay or derail sponsorship.
Target Sutter Roles With Active LCSW Requirements
Sutter Health frequently distinguishes between MSW and LCSW-required postings. Roles requiring licensure signal longer-term investment in the hire, which correlates with willingness to support H-1B sponsorship rather than treating the position as short-term contract work.
Search Sutter Health Openings Through Migrate Mate
Filter open Social Work positions at Sutter Health by visa sponsorship eligibility using Migrate Mate. This lets you prioritize roles where sponsorship has been confirmed rather than cold-applying and asking about immigration support after the fact.
Raise Sponsorship Timing Early in Interviews
Sutter Health's HR teams manage sponsorship internally, so clarify in the final interview round whether the role supports H-1B filing and what the expected start date is. H-1B petitions have an October 1 start date for cap-subject cases, which affects offer timing significantly.
Understand How PERM Fits Your Long-Term Path
For social workers pursuing permanent residency, Sutter Health has filed PERM applications under EB-2 and EB-3. Ask your recruiter whether the role is eligible for employer-sponsored green card support and at what point in your tenure that process typically begins.
Align Clinical Hours With California Licensure Deadlines
California requires supervised clinical hours for LCSW licensure, and your ability to complete those hours depends on maintaining valid work authorization. Track your H-1B petition dates against your BBS hour requirements so you're not caught in a gap between visa validity and licensure eligibility.

Find Social Work at Sutter Health JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Sutter Health sponsor H-1B visas for Social Workers?
Yes, Sutter Health has sponsored H-1B visas for Social Work roles. Sponsorship is more common for MSW-level and LCSW-required positions within its hospital and integrated care settings. Not every Social Work posting will come with sponsorship, so confirming eligibility directly with the recruiter during the interview process is the most reliable approach.
How do I apply for Social Work jobs at Sutter Health?
Applications go through Sutter Health's careers portal, where Social Work roles are listed by facility and care setting. Before applying, review whether the job description specifies an MSW or LCSW requirement, as this affects both your eligibility and the likelihood of visa sponsorship support. Tailoring your application to the specific clinical population or department strengthens your candidacy.
Which visa types does Sutter Health commonly use for Social Work roles?
Sutter Health has used both H-1B and employment-based immigrant visa categories, including EB-2 and EB-3, for Social Work positions. The H-1B is the primary nonimmigrant option for specialty occupation roles like clinical social work. For permanent residency, the PERM labor certification process under EB-3 is the most common pathway for social workers at healthcare systems.
What qualifications does Sutter Health expect for Social Work positions?
Most clinical Social Work roles at Sutter Health require a Master of Social Work degree from an accredited program. LCSW licensure in California is required for many senior or independently practicing roles. Experience in hospital discharge planning, behavioral health, or care management is frequently listed. International applicants should have their credentials evaluated and confirm their degree aligns with California's MSW equivalency standards.
How long does the sponsorship and hiring process take for Social Work roles at Sutter Health?
If you're subject to the H-1B cap, USCIS typically opens registration in March with an October 1 start date, so timing your offer to align with that cycle matters. Cap-exempt scenarios, such as transferring from a qualifying nonprofit or research institution, allow faster filing. Browse current Social Work openings at Sutter Health with sponsorship filters on Migrate Mate to identify roles with timelines that match your immigration status.
